Starling E. "Jack" Taylor

Starling E. "Jack" Taylor, 84, died Sunday, July 9, 2006, at Affinity Medical Center, after an extended illness.

Born in Beallsville, Ohio, he had lived in North Canton most of his life. He was a 1938 graduate of St. Clairsville High School, a 1942 graduate of Kent State University with a B.A. in accounting, and a 1981 graduate from Carnegie-Mellon University Graduate School of Industrial Administration. In 1945, Jack started to work for the Goodyear Tire Co. In 1951, he transferred to Goodyear Aerospace, where he held the positions of vice president, comptroller, and chief financial officer. He then moved back to Goodyear Tire and retired in 1987 as the vice president of corporate accountability and business ethics compliance. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in North Canton, where he was a past member of the church council, St. Clairsville Alumni Association, Kent State Alumni Association, Carnegie-Mellon University Alumni Association, and the North Canton Elks Lodge . 2020. Jack was a former member of the St. Luke Lutheran Home Board of Directors, where he was instrumental in starting the Waterford Independent Living Community, National Association of Accountants, National Association of Cost Accountants, and the American Institute of Corporate Controllers. He also volunteered for 21 years for the United Way of Summit County and received several awards of recognition. In 1985, he was named the Outstanding Alumnus of K.S.U. Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, a national honorary accounting fraternity. He was a World War II Army veteran.

Preceded in death by his first wife, Mary (Dolfi) Taylor; parents, John and Emma (Knuchel) Taylor; sister, Hazel Wolf; and a brother, Raymond Taylor, he is survived by his wife, Patricia Taylor of North Canton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Charles Thompson of North Canton, and Carol and Keith Smith of Massillon; three grandchildren, Kristina (Smith) Harris, Laurie Ann (Smith) Conley and Ryan Taylor Thompson; five great- grandchildren.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the Lamiell Funeral Home, with Pastor Mark Sherwindt officiating. Entombment will be at North Lawn Cemetery Mausoleum. Friends may call one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson's Association or the Alzheimer's Association.

Dear Pat and Susan, It's with deep regret that Jack has passed away. I will always remember him with fondness and you also. Taking care of him on Geri Psych. My thoughts are with you.

Our deepest sympathies to all members of Jack's family. This is a great loss to all who knew him.

I worked with Jack at Aerospace. He was always ready to help when I had a problem. We all knew we could count on him to do what was right and honest.

We are all better for having known him.
