529 West Thornton Street
Akron, OH
Tom ``Uncle Smooch' Cross, Jr., 93, born October 17, 1917, took off his war clothes and died in the Army of the Lord on June 23, 2011.

He was born in Swainsboro, Georgia. He volunteered for military service at the age of 21, serving our country in the U.S. Army for 7 years, 5 months, 9 days, 7 hours and 10 minutes. He reached the rank of Staff Sergeant by the time of his Honorable Discharge, earning many decorations, including the World War II Victory Medal and Asiatic Service Medal. He served with the 1870th Engineer Aviation Battalion and the 5th Aviation Squadron in Tallahassee, Fla., where he assisted the famed Tuskegee Airmen, married his wife, Bobbie, in 1943 and his love of Aeronautics bloomed.

Upon his discharge, he relocated to Akron to pursue his dreams and goals. He worked for Broadway Tire in downtown Akron for several years and later operated several parking lots in the same area; most notably the parking lot on the south corner of where John S. Knight Center stands today. His friendly and professional demeanor made him a staple of the Carmen Studio/All Ohio area on E. Mill Street. Tom also had many other business ventures in the Akron area. He successfully fulfilled his dream of flying on October 20, 1966, when he recorded his 1st solo flight at Freedom Field, under the instruction of Bob Parmelee.

Tom loved his family, life, engineering, his privacy and was an avid amateur radio enthusiast whose call letters were ``K8DSD.'

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Louise (Gunn) Cross,; sister, Annie Louise and wife, Bobbie. Left to rejoice in his life are his brother, Raphael (Synesica) Cross; sister-in-law, Lula Mae Cross; nephews, Raphael (Charlotte) Cross, Renaldo (Linda) Tyson, Marvin (Brandy) Tyson, all of Akron; nieces, Vernetta Cross-King of Cleveland and Pamela Cross of Washington, D.C. He leaves a host of cousins, great-nieces and nephews, special friends, church members and others to witness his journey.

Service will be held on Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at Brown Street Church of Christ, 1835 Brown Street, Akron, OH 44301, Minister Gerald Paugh officiating. Interment at Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends may visit the church from 10:30 a.m. until time of service. Procession will form and condolences may be sent to 1387 Greenwood Ave., Akron, OH 44320.
