Mildred Riggs

1922 - 2020

POMEROY — Mildred Rose Riggs, 98, of Pomeroy, Ohio, died Dec. 4, 2020, in her home, surrounded by her loving family. Mildred was born Aug. 1, 1922, in St. Louis, Missouri, the eighth and youngest child of the late John and Elizabeth Schoenberger-Zoeller.

During World War II, she worked as a Clerk at a U.S. Army medical depot, where she met Harley Riggs, an X-Ray Technician serving in the U.S. Army, who was stationed at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis. They married in 1946, and returned to the Riggs' family farm in Bedford Township 1950 to raise their family, where Mildred lived the rest of her life. She was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pomeroy, and enjoyed seeing her friends at Mass.

She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many. She was the source of unconditional love and support to her three children. She was her grandchildren's biggest fan, and sat on an untold number of school bleachers over several decades as she cheered them on in athletic competitions, plays, recitals, and graduations across Ohio, Michigan, and other neighboring states. She embodied the character traits of the Greatest Generation, and her family will carry the lessons she taught them through the rest of their lives.

Mildred is predeceased by her husband, Harley E. Riggs, her parents, her eight siblings and their spouses, her husband's ten siblings and their spouses, nieces, nephews, and many other loved ones. She is survived by her children, Nancy (George) Brawley of Niles, Michigan, William Riggs of Pomeroy, and Margaret (Mike) Barr of Pomeroy, as well as seven grandchildren, Jeff (Alison) Brawley, Chris (Lorie) Brawley, Annette (Mike) Vota, Mick (Danielle) Barr, Matthew (Brooke) Brawley, Marc (Samantha) Barr, and Amy (Andy) Garnes, seventeen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren, along with beloved nieces and nephews.

The family gives a heartfelt thanks for the loving care and attention provided by Regina Sayers, CNP and Amanda Eblin, BSN, RN.

The family will celebrate a private funeral mass at Sacred Heath Catholic Church, followed by internment at Burlingham Cemetery.
