Scott Epling Obituary

GALLIPOLIS — Scott Brian Epling, 61, Gallipolis, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 in Columbus.

Scott, named for the Rev. Scott Westerman, was born April 15, 1957 in Gallipolis , son of Barbara Cardwell Epling, of Gallipolis, and the late Miles T. Epling. Scott had resided with his mother in Gallipolis for the last eight years. His wife, Susan, and their daughter, Samantha (Matt) Smith, reside in Yellow Springs. Scott enjoyed being with his four brothers and one sister and their families as often as possible. They are Mark (Diane) Epling, of Charleston, West Virginia, Brett (Cindy) Epling, of Bidwell, Dean (Regina) Epling, of Sharpsburg, Georgia, Kent (Debbie) Epling, of Midwest City, Oklahoma and Ann (Greg) Harrington, of Houston, Texas, as well as 11 nieces and nephews.

After playing football and graduating from Gallia Academy High School, Scott completed his undergraduate studies at the Colorado School of Mines and earned his BSBA/MBA from Eastern New Mexico University where he played rugby. He joined Calgom Mining, a consolidated subsidiary of Sunbelt Mining, New Mexico. He joined a team to build/operate the Gold Stripe Project in the Sierras of Northern California, a 1,200 ton/hour gold-ore cyanide heap-leach operation. As overall business manager among his other duties he helped develop the Financial Management Language, personnel policies, managed the timber claims and sales, gold sales and compliance duties with the U.S.F.S. and the California EPA.

Several years later Scott returned to the Midwest working for Consolidated GoldFields, at that time the largest mining company in the world. Under their US Subsidiary, ARC America, they acquired American Aggregates where he was responsible for various mine reclamation projects, surplus and raw land development, reserves acquisition and management, permitting, zoning, annexation and was part of the M & A team.

Scott was then offered a position with NCR Corporation, a world leader in global technology. For the next 14 years, Scott worked literally around the world developing, managing, negotiating and closing over $1 billion in real estate related projects on behalf of the shareholders of AT & T, Lucent Technologies and NCR. Since 2005 he has partnered with Scott and Barbara Swain in the TCS Forestry Management in logging and development companies throughout the United States. Scott has sat on multiple public and private boards, worked for and with the US Forestry Service, the EPA, US Parks Service and the State Department of Transportation, providing subject matter expertise testimony in the Federal Courts regarding logging and mining land values.
