CROWN CITY — Thomas E. Jones, age 91 of Crown City, died at home on January 11, 2020, following a brief illness.
He was born July 2, 1928. After spending many years in agriculture and as a pig farmer, Tom dedicated the last 30 years of his life to silviculture and his passion for all things trees. He planted and managed thousands of black walnut trees on his property as a memorial to his sons.
Tom is survived by his sisters, Patsy Nolan and Carolyn Jones; close friends, Carolyn, Chip, and Erica Young, Tyler and Jassae Young and their daughters, Hyndrix and Tyler Everleigh; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Many people who worked for Tom, and many friends he made over the years considered him family.
He was preceded in death by his wife Clara, and their sons Richard Edward and Jason Allen, as well as brother Jim and sister Ginny.
Tom donated his body to the Marshall University Human Gift Registry for medical research. There will be no funeral services. A private celebration of life is planned for the spring.

My love & prayers for all the family & friends of Tom. My family thought the world of Tom & Clara. They were wonderful people. Clara & Tom are with their boys now. I pray that they are all togather again.

Rest In Peace Tom after a lifetime of hard work, both on the farm and in the community. I grew up on the adjoining farm. He and my Dad, Mel Gatewood, we're cousins. Later in life they spent time together in the woodworking shop building beautiful furniture. He was well read and full of interesting, sometimes funny opinions and stories. I had the recent pleasure of a long phone conversation with him and found his conversation as lively as it had always been.

Sad to hear of Tom's passing. Tom was a large influence in a lot of our young lives. Whether it was playing youth to High School football with him coaching years ago, or an impromptu basketball game at the Farm, with Tom's signature hook shot. I remember running on Rt 7 with Richard for basketball conditioning and Combining Corn and Soybeans for Tom with Jake running around with the dogs. Both were fine young men taken way too early in life. I learned many things from Tom over the years and will miss stopping by once in a while just to hear him laugh.

I had the privilege of knowing this man and his wife Clara for many, many years! It doesn't seem real that just short of 9 months ago we were saying good bye to Clara, now Tom. They both were good people and are missed tremendously!!
