Aubrey Matthews Obituary

Aubrey Hugh Matthews, 91, passed away Monday, August 23, 2010 at his home in Oklahoma City.Services are scheduled at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 26, 2010 at the Wilshire Church of Christ in Oklahoma City. He was born February 6, 1919 in Blue Ridge, Texas to Everett and Florence Matthews. Hugh graduated from Leonard High School in Leonard, Texas. He moved to Tulsa in 1938 where he met Edna Mae Vinson. They were married in 1940 and remained loving companions for 67 years before her death in 2008. In 1942, Hugh entered military service and trained to become a U.S. Army radar technician. He was promoted to technical sergeant before completing his tour of duty in 1946. Returning to Tulsa he secured employment with Spartan Aircraft. A year later he joined Southwestern Bell Telephone as a technician. At the start of the Korean Conflict Hugh was recalled to military duty serving as leader of a radar team stationed at Cape Cod, Mass. and later in New York City. Returning to Tulsa after his military tour ended, Hugh resumed his career with Southwestern Bell Telephone. After 33 years of service Hugh retired from Southwestern Bell as supervisor of the Area Business Department. Hugh and Edna Mae traveled extensively throughout the United States in their recreational vehicle during their retirement. Hugh was an active member of the Church of Christ, serving as an elder in both the 10th and Rockford Church of Christ in Tulsa and later at the Wilshire Church of Christ in Oklahoma City. He is survived by a brother, Eddie R. Mathews of Denison, Texas; by daughters, Sharon Neville and husband Mike of Tulsa, Diana Willis and husband Roger of Keller, Texas, Marsha Gray and husband Jim of Edmond; one son, Kenneth Matthews and wife Irene of Oklahoma City; 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He served God with a selfless heart and was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ most recently the Wilshire Church of Christ. We will all miss his sense of humor and his love of family.

What great memories I have of your dad/granddad! He was a very supportive uncle and set a fine example for me in my younger years. I know he rests in peace and has truly known the peace which passes all understanding in his Lord and Savior.
