DONNA HARKINS Obituary
June 6, 1943 - February 13, 2015 DEL CITY Donna Louise Harkins, born June 6, 1943, was lifted up by the hand of God on February 13, 2015. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Thomas Harkins; two daughters, Carolyn Harkins and Susan Stilwell and husband Shane; and one granddaughter, Ashlee Stilwell. She is also survived by her brother, Clayton Lancaster and wife Dorothy; several nieces, nephews, great- nieces and nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Margery; father, Allen; brother, Allen Dale; and sister, Clara Jean. Donna was a humble, devout Christian who served the Lord in many ways. She also was an accomplished musician who played the piano and clarinet. She accompanied Susan on the piano when Susan was young and singing in the church. Donna was the treasurer at Aldersgate UMC and the first financial secretary at Sunny Lane UMC. She served on the SPR committee plus numerous other committees at both churches. One of the things Donna was best known for was her skill of cooking, which she used to serve evening meals each week to the youth programs. Donna also cooked for the United Methodist men's monthly dinner meetings. She always served delicious meals. The wedding services for the SLUMC women's needed a co-coordinator to help with rehearsals and receptions. She served for several years in that capacity. Donna later sang in the Mid-Del Singers and played clarinet in the church orchestra at SLUMC. Donna had been an active member of the Emmaus Community at SLUMC and served in various ways on the Emmaus weekends. Donna was a faithful member of the Faith Seekers Sunday School Class. She received the highest honor from the United Methodist women for her service in the Methodist Church. She provided her children with great values and morals to prepare them for a future full of wisdom, love, joy and responsibility. She let them experience life and learn without interfering or judging. Her unconditional love for family and friends was unmatched. She made everything better. Be at peace, mother, free from earthly pains and watch over us with joy knowing how much you were loved. Our hearts are heavy, but we will not say good-bye. We've agreed that this is not the end but rather a new beginning. As we look upon the heavens tonight, you will be that brightest star. You will forever be our rock, the one we think of in all the special times. We know our angel will be there taking care of us as she has always done. Our loving mother, our shining star. Donna says thank you for being part of her life; friends are the family you choose. Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, February 17 at Sunny Lane United Methodist Church, 2020 S. Sunnylane, Del City, OK 73115. Dress is casual, no ties necessary. Services arranged by Ford Funeral Service. If you wish to honor Donna's memory, make donations to her favorite charity, St. Jude. Sonnet written by her 18 year old granddaughter: GRANDMA, I'LL MISS YOU Nena, you taught me everything I know from baking to sewing and ice cream made of snow. I only have one question, why are you going? The doctors say it doesn't look good, say good-bye and do what you can; trust me, I would if I could. See, I don't think he is right, this strange man, a coat and diploma doesn't say much; I don't dare trust what he's saying not one bit because I don't believe you're leaving when I can see you and such. I'm not going to stop believing; I refuse to quit. I won't believe his jokes, his fibs, his lies, not when I know you'll be there, the graduation, the wedding, the kid; you're my angel in the sky.
