Harlan Speegle Obituary

Harlan B. Speegle, after a short illness, was reunited in Heaven with the love of his life, Virginia Lee Speegle, on October 27, 2007. Harlan was best known for serving chicken and biscuits at Oklahoma City's legendary Shipman's cafes, which he owned and operated from 1959 to 1988. Harlan, who was never short of a genuine smile and full of Southern graciousness, was quick to make every customer - and employee - a friend. At twelve years old, Harlan left Hugo, Oklahomaand his paper route-and moved to Oklahoma City. It was then he met Virginia Lee Shipman, whom he fell instantly in love with and married eight years later. Harlan and Virginia had four sons, Tommie, Harlan, Jr., Steve, and Randy; and four grandchildren, Jessica, Zachary, Brittani, and Jacob. They were truly the light of his world. The grandchildren fondly remember Papa for his special sandwiches, ice cream cones, checkers, and dollars. Before he married Virginia in 1947, he chose to put his high school graduation on hold to serve his country in the Navy during WWII, where he was stationed in the Philippines. Soon after his discharge, he received his high school diploma, which was a priority before proposing marriage to Virginia. He then went to work for Capitol Steel as a draftsman until 1959. Harlan was an active member of the South Oklahoma City and Capitol Hill Community where he was always eager to give back. His church home was Calvary Temple Assembly of God where he and his family were active members for many years. Harlan was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Virginia; his mother, Janie; son, Tommie; mother and father-in-law, Jewel and F.C. Shipman; brother and sister-in-law, Vaughn and Venita Knight; and great-nephew, Bryan Knight. He is survived by his son, Harlan, Jr.; son, Steve and his wife Darlene; son, Randy and his wife Leisa; grandchildren, Jessica, Zachary, Brittani, and Jacob; niece, Sharon Howard and her husband Karl; nephew, V.C. Knight and his wife Toni; nephew, Ronnie Knight and his wife Teresa; great-nieces and nephews, Justin Howard, Jordan Howard, Jarred Howard, John Knight, Carrie Rose Knight, and Whitney Knight; godson, Michael Hopper and his wife D'Lisa; and Harlan's many cousins and friends, including R.C. and Mary Lou Taylor, and Ted and Aloma York. The family will receive guests on Tuesday, October 30, 2007, at Vondel Smith & Son Mortuary at South Lakes from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Vondel Smith & Son Mortuary at South Lakes, 4000 SW 119th St., Wednesday, October 31, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. Harlan will be laid to rest following services next to his wife, Virginia, at Resthaven Memory Gardens. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Heartland Hospice of Norman and Healthcare Innovations Private Services.

Dear Randy and Family,

I can only imagine how special this good hearted, solid, and decent man was to each of you. May you be comforted and encouraged by good memories, his legacy, and definitely by that biscuit recipe.
My sympathy goes out to each of you individually as I know you each had a special place in his heart as well.

To all of you:
I feel your loss. The loss of my own Pop is still so fresh. You never forget them and are always thinking about them. He was quite a man. Always smiling at everything. Can't ever remember seeing him mad and I have known him for a long. Always had a hot cup of coffee ready for you and that "nasty" bread pudding (to each his own)but of course I loved and do miss the biscuits. I remember him ALWAYS! trying to feed you no matter where you were either at the cafe or if you were in his home. I know that you will miss him lots but you can always keep his memory alive! Love all of you!

I remember as a little girl always looking forward to our family going out to eat at Shipman's. I always got a bowl of beans. I can still remember how great that bowl of beans tasted to me and that was at least 44 years ago. We were regular customers back in the "Olden Days". So sorry for your loss. The Todd Family

I'm so sorry for your loss. I didn't know Mr. Speegle or his family personally, but I remember Shipman's Cafe well. I shouldn't admit this, but my friends and I used to cut school to go have breakfast at Shipman's. That was in 1970.

Speegle Family: We always thought a lot of your family. Long time friends & customers. Our dad George Meeks & his friend Marvin Kephart & all the many other people ate at Shipman's regular. My wife & I ate at Shipman's when we were expecting our son almost 21 yrs ago. We agree with everyone else about the love that was put into their food, they were lovely people, & God has their reward in Heaven. God bless you all & our prayers are with you. I can't imagine Oklahoma City without Shipman's restaurant. My mother-in-law, the late Edna Pugh knew the entire family, and was especially close to Mrs. Shipman. My sons recall the fun times they had over at Harlan and Virginia's. Our thoughts and prayers are with your entire family at this time.

Speegle gang...what a great memory of Harlan and your whole family this article about the Cafe has invoked in my mind. My memory of the restaurant was that the club steaks were a great side dish to go along with the endless supply of fresh hot biscuits, each and everyone served with a smile by a genuine persona. There’s a hole in our City with the absence of Harlan, and Virginia.

What a kind and personable gentleman. My Dad intoduced me to Harlan sometime in the late 60's at Shipman's on So. Robinson. They had gone to school together in Hugo, he always spoke to me each time I ate there, like I was the old friend. He will be missed, your family is in our prayers.
