JOHN EASTERLY Obituary

Sept. 30, 1935 - Jan. 8, 2019 OKLAHOMA CITY Jack lived a full and happy life. We were all his favorites, and he was ours. Only child of Gilbert Bernard & Eva Easterly in Syracuse, NY, he died in hospice the day after suffering a stroke, surrounded by his large and loving family. Jack was preceded in death by his parents; by his first wife, Jane Stein Easterly, his childhood sweetheart and mother of his children; and by Lois Green Easterly, beloved wife of 32 years and mother of his stepchildren. A genuine renaissance man, inspired by excellence in all things, Jack boldly moved his young family to Oklahoma City in 1962 to work for General Electric and build a better life. He transitioned to the advertising industry in the early 1970s, where his particular brand of critical thinking and precision insight for the printed image, tempered with a matchless wit, made him indispensable as a production manager until his retirement as VP of Production of Jordan Associates in 2000. He is survived by Marilyn Backus, companion of 14 years; by daughters, Lee Vincent and Lynne Young (husband Jack); son, Graham Easterly (wife Julie); by stepdaughters, Jill Jekel and Lynn Ranger (companion Geoff); and by stepsons, Todd Ranger (wife Sherlene), Chad Backus (wife Amy), and Taylor Backus (wife Tiffany). His grandchildren are: his namesake, John Dean "Jack" Easterly, Lauren Williamson (husband George), Cory Vincent (wife Jen), Matthew Young (wife Rachael), Becky Grisales (husband Andres), JoAnn Horvat (husband Scott), Virginia Ellis (husband Eric), Christine Liles (husband Jeff), Will Ranger, Stephen and Daniel Jekel (wife Gemma), and Brooks, Bennett, Clayton, Cody, and Walker Backus. Great-grandchildren are BD Buddy Daisy and Max Vincent, Hayden Shawareb, Sophia and Bella Grisales, Gavin and Jarrett Ellis, Dylan Jekel, and Phoenix and Xander Williamson. Donations may be made to Martin Nature Park, Infant Crisis Services, or by teaching someone to read. Jack donated his body to science. Look for a celebration of his life this spring, surrounded by things he loved, the lake, the sunset, a full moon or a starry night. Contact a family member to leave your information. We would love to see you there to share Jack tales.

In 2022, still remembering Jack often. One of his hobbies was refurbishing antique appliances, and in early 1996 he refurbished and rewired my mother’s old waffle iron. It was his wedding present to me, and my wife and I use it almost every Sunday morning, 25 years later. Thank you again, Jack, for our friendship back to the early sixties. I think fondly of you still. You were loved by many, including me.

Jack, I write this ? principally for your family', believing you are at my shoulder, as are our loved ones - always near in another mode, another world.
I believe you will take every opportunity to touch them from your heart, protecting them in ways ethereal, perhaps comforting them as needed while passing our understanding of it all. Peace, my brother...

Jack and I were classmates at Syracuse University studying Industrial Design. On several times I would mention his (cylinder) trash can kite that as a design project, his concept hung high in the sky, virtually motionless startling everyone. He had a crafty, inventiveness on so many levels it was a treat to watch, converse and see what vision he had for whatever. He was like a second brother to me and my family loved his dry humor when we were together, thus I suspect his TALENT will without a doubt be put to great use.
I will miss our check-in phone calls and will continue to think of him, and his family, when I hear of weather reports of dire, in his area, but terribly concerned for his family's safety. Jack is safe now and will forever be in my thoughts til we meet again to pick up where we left off. My brother, rest well after the fun tasks you will likely be engaged in.

I have treasured Jack's friendship since the early 1960's when we did sports car rallies and took photos at sports car races. He wrenched my first race car in 1966. Some of his great racing photos can still be seen on Facebook. Ten years older than me, he was an incredibly positive influence on my life. So thankful that in his later years he had Marilyn in his life.

Jack was a great friend and mentor when he and I worked for GKD Advertising. I started working at a young age. And he was always there to advise. Never forgot the things he taught me in the advertising world or the fun times we had at work and company gatherings. Rest in Peace my friend,

Jack was a friend and a highlight of my work life. We spent many years at Jordan Associates where the agency grew, aided by his taste, experience and guidance. He made every project better, every day more fun. Rest in peace.
