JOSEPH RUFFIN Obituary

April 1, 1955 - March 23, 2014 OKLAHOMA CITY Born in Gotemba, Japan, to parents Dr. Joseph Bernard Ruffin & Vestina Provencio Ruffin, Joe spent his childhood in Oklahoma City and graduated from Classen High School ('73) and then the University of Oklahoma (`78). Joe's time after college in Korea with the Peace Corps ignited his lifelong passion for defending the rights of others, which would fuel his life's work as a criminal defense attorney (OCU Law '87). While he was a dedicated professional, Joe was a man devoted to his family. As the oldest brother of six, he influenced and inspired his siblings to achieve and give to others. As a husband and father, his thoughtfulness, sensitivity and dedication will always be lovingly remembered. Memories of Joe's sense of humor and larger-than-life personality will sustain all who loved him. Preceded in death by his father, Joseph; and his wife, Maria Elena Ruffin de Escribano; Joe is survived by his wife, Gayle Ann; children, Maria Belen, Diana Luz, Daniel Antonio, and Montserrat Elena (OKC); mother, Vestina; brother, Mykl Ruffino and wife Susan, and Anya (Skokie, IL); brother, Carlos Ruffino and wife Delinda, and Michaella and AJ Ramler, Robert and Kayla Ruffino (Dallas, TX); brother, Dr. Richard and wife Patty (OKC), and Julie and Evan DeWalt (Atlanta), Andrew (Washington, DC), and William (Seattle); brother, Mark and wife Manda, and Reina, Aubrey, David and John (OKC); and sister, Lisa and her husband Dr. Bentley Edmonds, and Joe, Adele, Charlotte and Natalie (OKC). A celebration of Joe's life will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 31 at the parish hall (Connor Center) of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 3214 N. Lake Ave., Oklahoma City. The family expresses profound thanks to the dedicated doctors, nurses, and staff of OU Medicine.

I am so saddened to learn, today, of Joe's death. He was such a committed advocate for his clients. He always checked with me prior to pleading out his immigrant clients so he could be sure to lessen the possibility of deportation. No other attorneys ever did that. He will be missed.

I served with Joe in the Peace Corp, he was great fun. I remember waking up one morning to the sound of his laughter, he was reading a book I had lent him and he was trying to finish before we left. A great guy. I am so sorry for your loss.

Our sincere condolences to the entire Ruffin family. We knew Joe as a fellow Classen family and would see him at school events; as a scouting family, and would see him at countless scout events; and we'll all miss his smiling face at the courthouse! Love, Linda, John and Adam Dodson.

I'm saddened to learn the news of Joseph's passing. I've known the Ruffin family for 50 years, having attended many of the same schools as youngsters. My family and I had the pleasure of visiting with Joseph during an anniversary celebration of Wilson Elementary School a few years ago. Our prayers and condolences go out to all of Joseph's family and friends during this tragic time.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Joe's beautiful family. We will continue to think of him when we drive by his house in Quail Creek. Joe was always out walking his dog in the neighborhood, and would always stop and talk and ask how you were doing. I will always remember him being so kind, and taking an entire afternoon to help our youngest daughter find the perfect size violin, to fit her small sized frame. Our thoughts go out to his family, especially his children.

I grew up with joe, and took a second look when he had that beautiful long black hair. He always gave me a hard time, but with humor. My heart goes out to his family. So glad I got to see him at the reunion, where he still gave me hard time. Way to young to die, he will be missed....

I will miss him a great deal. I have many good memories of Joe. He was my first real friend in the neighborhood we grew up in. We bicycled all over the city together. He was a source of constant challenge, wit, intelligence and compassion. I was not a typical girl, had few friends, loved to learn, but was not doing well enough in math to qualify for science which I loved. He bicycled with me to summer tutoring at Northeast and challenged me to do better to achieve my dreams. We shared dreams..his of going to the Peace Corps and mine to make it to college. We both far surpassed and were surprised along the way by real life in our pursuits in very good ways. I feel so much for his family...too young to leave his dreams...love to you all...Leslie

Joe and I spent great summers during Jr High running wild in the neighborhood with model aircraft, small motorcycles, and doing things that our science classes suggested we shouldn't do. Those were great years for the 'gang'. It is very sad to lose such a powerhouse too early.

My thoughts and prayers are extended to the family. Joe and I became friends when we worked at John A. Brown's-Downtown in 1974. He was always cordial and was full of positive energy. Our paths crossed numerous times through the years and we would always be glad to see one another. Joe will always remain an inspiration to me.
