Sidney Albert Swinney, Jr., known to his loved ones as Sidney, passed away peacefully on Nov. 8, 2023 at the age of 80 at Nortons Brownsboro hospital. Sidney was born on Feb. 28, 1943 in La Grange, Kentucky to Sidney and Jean Swinney. He proudly served in the army from 1966 through 1967.
Sidney was a highly educated individual, having attended the University of Louisville, Bellarmine University and the University of Wisconsin. He obtained a Masters in Finance, showcasing his dedication to his field.
Throughout his career, Sidney held various esteemed positions. He began as a Vice President at First National Bank and later at National Processing. He then worked as the CFO at Copy Corp and WZKS (Kiss 103.9 and WFIA 900AM) in Louisville. After retiring for a few years, Sidney partnered with Jerry Head to start Crestwood Plumbing, eventually selling his share to Jerry.
Sidney was a devoted family man. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Karen Swinney; and their two sons, Jonathan Swinney (Heather) and Jeremy Swinney. Sidney cherished his role as a grandfather to Devin Swinney, Logan Swinney, Alieta Farnsworth (Connor), Isabella Swinney, Gabriella Swinney and Silas Swinney. He also leaves behind five siblings, Betty Whiteley (Donald), Cookie Leet (Robert), Emory (Gina), Robert (Cecelia) and Peggy (Steve) Horlander, as well as several nieces and nephews. Sidney's warm smile and kind heart touched the lives of many friends.
In his free time, Sidney enjoyed working on an old tractor that he lovingly restored and used around the house. He had a knack for fixing things, both for himself and for his friends. Gardening brought him joy, and he took pleasure in watching Gunsmoke on TV every afternoon. Above all, Sidney cherished spending time with his grandchildren, always ensuring they received a big hug before parting ways. Sidney also enjoyed cruises with his wife, Karen and friends.
Sidney found solace in watching Northeast Christian Church online every Sunday morning. His faith was an important aspect of his life.
A memorial service will be held at Pewee Valley Presbyterian Church Nov. 25, with visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by the service at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Crusade for Children, Pewee Presbyterian Church or Northeast Christian Church.
