KILL BUCK - Mr. Anthony Barrile, 88, of Kill Buck, died Tuesday morning (Aug. 20, 2013) at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born June 9, 1925, in Limestone, he was the eighth child of the late Antonio and Vetta Policastro Barrile. He was married Oct. 12, 1946, in the former St. Patrick's Church to the late Nancy Quattrone, who predeceased him June 26, 2011.
Tony retired from Dresser-Clark in Olean in 1986 as the shop foreman, where he had been employed for more than 30 years. He was a licensed master plumber for the city of Salamanca from 1972 to 2012 and served as plumbing inspector for the city of Salamanca.
He sought to be a member of the military service at age 16. After he was prevented from joining twice by his mother, Tony succeeded in enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1943. He graduated from basic training in Sampson; then, from June 5, 1943, to Jan. 17, 1946, he served aboard the USS Gherardi DD637-DMS30 during World War II in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.
He was a member of the former St. Patrick's Church, a life member of the Kill Buck Volunteer Fire Department and the Square Circle Club in Kill Buck and a founding member of Limestone American Legion Memorial Post No. 1560. Tony served on the Great Valley Town Planning Board as a councilman and was a town supervisor.
He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, spending time with his family and his morning coffee group.
Surviving are a daughter, Judith Bess of Kill Buck; a son, Thomas (Sally Minchener) Barrile of Randolph; six grandchildren, Lt. Col. Damien (Heather) Bess of North Carolina, Major Darby (Erin) Bess of Tampa, Fla., Dr. Christopher (Amanda) Bess of Walla Walla, Wash., Stephanie (Eric) Wade of Niskayuna, Lindsay (Josh Annis) Barrile of Elmira and Nicole (John) Drake of Allegany; 11 great-grandchildren, Alicia Bess, Emily Bess, Triston Bess, Fernando Bess, Sophia Bess, Peter Bess, Charles Bess, Cole Wade, Dillon Wade, Caelinn Drake and Fiona Drake; a brother, Joseph Barrile of Limestone; three sisters, Angie Whiteman of Limestone, Vicki (James) Chapman of Limestone and Camilla Rouse of Florida.
He was predeceased by five brothers and four sisters.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the O'Rourke & O'Rourke Inc. Funeral Home, 25 River St., Salamanca. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday (Aug. 24, 2013) in St. Patrick's Church, Limestone. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Limestone. Full military honors will be conducted by members of the Allegany American Legion Post No. 892.
