Dean Long Obituary

GULFPORT, Miss. - "The Man, The Myth, The Legend," otherwise known as Dean Allyn Long, passed away Monday (April 25, 2016) with his daughters by his side at the early age of 61.

Dean, the son of Arthur and E. Lucy Long, was born July 18, 1954, in Hornell, N.Y. He graduated from Canaseraga Central School with the Class of 1972 and went on to play basketball via scholarship at Olean Business Institute while obtaining an associate degree in accounting.

Dean went on to become an accomplished auditor for the Pennsylvania Department of the Auditor General and audited several local school districts.

Even though accounting was his career field, he considered himself a master craftsman and took great pride in his creations. He had many hobbies, but overall athletics and mentoring children were his passion. Through countless years of coaching, umpiring, refereeing and volunteering, he has left a legacy with many people that will last a lifetime.

Throughout his lifetime, every morning began with ESPN, peanut butter toast (a necessity with every meal) and at least two cups of coffee. Dean has always been known as the master of all sports, as he played and enjoyed watching any of them, from women's softball to college basketball and everything in between. His daughters refer to him as a walking sports almanac. Some of his favorites include his beloved New York Yankees and his Buffalo Bills. At the end of the day, though, above everything else, Dean's pride and joy has always been his girls.

He is survived by two daughters, Danielle (Quentin) Bradt and Angela (Michael) Copponi; and four granddaughters, Dakoda Bradt, Madison Copponi, Makena Bradt and Chelsea Copponi. Even though his family is small, he has touched the lives of so many.

It is not the end yet, but a new beginning. To honor the man all held so dear, a memorial softball game and picnic is being planned for early June and will be held in Allegany, N.Y., with more information to follow.

The family would also like to thank Dr. Olivia Hightower and the staff at Cannon Hospice for all of their love and care.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his name can be sent to the St. Bonaventure women's softball team. For an online guestbook and tributes, visit www.riemannfamily.com.

To the family of Dean Long.
I went to school with Dean at OBI and was a friend. He was always a great kid (I was older). I wish we had stayed in touch. I don't know if I knew at the time he was from Hornell or not, that was a long time ago. I grew up on Davenport St in Hornell. Maybe that was what we had in common.
I am truly sorry for your loss.

Sending our love and prayers for strength. He was a good dad and grandpa. He taught so many "kids" baseball, softball and of course the grade school basketball. They all loved your dad. Our love Aunt Bev & Uncle Skip

I knew Dean (aka My Esteemed Colleague) for many years. He first coached me in basketball (5th grade), and then I had the privilege of coaching with him during my high school and college years. Our friendship grew and grew over the years, even as we separated geographically. He was a dear friend and we remained close! I enjoyed meeting him as he traveled through Erie on his trips to and from his hometown of "agaresanac" (Canaseraga backwards). Between his jokes, the "What" game, coaching memories, and our times playing pool, he will never be forgotten. Thank you for being a mentor to me in so many ways!

I didn't know Dean that long but I had a ball playing music with Dean. He played the drums.
He also stayed at my house when he was in town and we had some great grillings.
Dean was so happy when I got him backstage at some music festivals.
My prayers are with his family now.
RIP Dean!
