Kenneth DeLong Obituary

Kenneth H. DeLong

FRANKLINVILLE --- Ken DeLong of 2092 East Hill Road, Franklinville, passed away on Thursday, October 10, 2024, in Grand Island.

Ken was born on April 24, 1949, in Olean and was the son of Herbert and Olive Nichols DeLong. On August 26, 1978, he married his loving wife of 46 years, Susan Roher.

Ken was a 1967 graduate of Olean High School. In 1970, he was drafted into the US Army and served in Vietnam. On his return, he attended Alfred State College earning a 2-year degree in Data Processing. He then attended RIT where he worked as a Computer Operator and eventually got his BS degree in Computer Science.

In 1983, he and his family moved to Franklinville. He worked as a Computer Programmer at the Marine Midland Bank in Buffalo and later at Cooper Industries (formerly McGraw-Edison) in Olean. His last employment was with Curtis Oil in Pennsylvania working on an oil well drilling rig. He enjoyed running, bicycling, fishing, hunting, riding his motorcycle, traveling with his family, and playing with his dog, Sam. In his free time, he could quite often be found milling his own lumber, making his own maple syrup, building various projects, or working on vehicles.

Besides his loving wife Sue, Ken is survived by his two children, Teresa (Christopher Shields) DeLong of Honolulu, HI, and Kevin DeLong of Baltimore, MD, a grandson, Parker Shields, two brothers, Gary of Olean and Harley (Donna) of Hinsdale, and several nieces and nephews.

Ken was predeceased by his parents and a daughter, Jennifer.

Here is Ken in June 1973. We met at SUNY Alfred where he and I were Psi Delta Omega brothers. We shared an apartment at Winton Rd and Jefferson Rd in Rochester from 1973 thru 1975 when we both met our brides-to-be; corny but true. He had a Triumph and a BSA at that time. The pictured helper kid is simply a neighborhood boy. My wife Carolyn and I were the band for Sue and Ken's wedding in 1978 and they came to our wedding in Fairport in 1980.

Prayers to the family. I worked with Kenny on a lot of things when working at Cooper Power Systems. I can honestly say he was a brilliant man and a very good conversationalist. I am so sorry for your loss and to hear of his passing. He was such a kind and sweet man. I will always remember Kenny for always making me smile.
