I still think of Alan being such a good friend & again, always willing to help those in need with our Operation Christmas group. We had great visits in the Colonel's Office while I worked there & he worked down the hall. So happy to consider him a friend.

I was so shocked to hear about Alan. I headed-up the Operation Santa Glenwood Corps of Engineers' visits for many years and often had problems getting folks to go with me. I only had to ask Alan once and after that he was always willing and ready to go. I had the pleasure of getting to know Alan quite well, since I only worked a few doors down the hall in the Exec Office and our paths crossed quite often. Alan was one of the most pleasant and kindest men I ever worked with. Heaven must be a much better place with him there and how blessed I am to have known him. My thoughts and prayers to his wife, daughters, and their families.

I was shocked to hear of Al's passing. He was one of the good ones. I saw him often when I worked with at the Corps, and he always had a smile and a kind word. I'd also see him at St. Wenceslaus, and he even made a positive impression on my parents, even though they only met him a few times. He truly was one of the nicest people I've had the pleasure of knowing.

To the Ruff Family: Al was one of the persons that I will always remember from the Corps of Engineers. I truly enjoyed his ability to make whoever was around him laugh. He was such a warm, kind and generous person who always had a joke or story to tell. I hope your fond memories keep you all in good spirits during this difficult time. May Al "Rest in Peace" in God's loving arms.

Phyllis, I was saddened to hear about Alan. My sympathies to you and the rest of the Ruff family. Even though it's been many years since I've seen Alan, the memories of our times at Clifton Hill Church will always be with us. He was a great guy and if I remember correctly, a pretty good basketball player, too.

March 5, 2014

I didn't work with Al directly at the Corps of Engineers, but whenever I saw him in the hallways, he always had a smile on his face and always took the time to chat a minute. I am so sorry for your loss. I will lift up your family in my prayer.

To the Ruff family ... All of us from the Benson High School class of 1969 are so saddened by the loss of our classmate. But he was more than our classmate, he was our friend. Our heartfelt condolences to you all. May all of you find emotional strength in your memories of your time with him and your faith.

Al was always the first one in with a kind word, generous gesture, an ironic story to make you laugh or a cheerful word to make a demanding work place a little warmer and a little nicer. I knew him more than 40 years, back to when he first dated his beautiful wife Sharon. He never had a negative thing to say. What a great man he was. I'll miss you, Al. Your 2013 Christmas time photo with your granddaughter says it all about you. Sleep in Peace, my friend. Sharon and girls--I am so sorry, but count your blessings! They are many.

Alan will be missed by many. He always wore a smile with a very kind heart. I remember when his family adopted one of our puppies, baby, and our daughter and son were young but Alan made sure we would get picture updates of baby. He made their day by keeping us updated. Even though I haven't worked directly with him in a few years, he will be missed.

Al was a great mentor as a new employee to the corp he was always quick to answer my questions and be a bright spot every morning. He would stop by everyday and say good morning. He was one of the good ones and will be missed.

March 4, 2014

I really enjoyed working with Alan at the Corps of Engineers. As my daughter became interested in music during her elementary school years, I purchased her first Saxophone from Alan. Over the years, whenever he spotted me in the hall he always inquired about her and her music interests. He shared a smile and a kind word to anyone he happened to meet. We will miss him. March 4, 2014

I'm saddened to hear of Al's untimely death. I worked with him for several years when he was involved with the Corps Military Design Branch and I was the liaison for AO at the IAAAP. We had a lot in common, and shared many moments both professionally and socially. He will be missed - my sympathies to Sharon & the family.

March 4, 2014

To the Ruff family, we grew up with Alan on Charles street, attended Clifton Hill Church and Benson High School. We had pretty much lost contact with him over the years until he came to our father's funeral in 1995. He said our dad, Elmer, had done a lot for him in Boy Scouts and even though that had been some 25 years prior, Alan had stopped to pay his respects. Obviously, Alan was a very considerate, caring and respectful person. So sorry to hear of his passing. John Walkenhorst for the Walkenhorst family.

Alan was the most pleasant and kind person to work with. He was always available to take his own annual leave and visit facilities at Christmas with Operation Santa. A picture of Alan and I at one of those visits will always be close to my heart. God Bless the Ruff Family. Although Alan is now with God, you were truly blessed to share your lives with him.
