David Bolam Obituary

Bolam, Dr. David

January 20, 1943 - July 13, 2022

David was born in Ottumwa, IA to William and Jean Bolam. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Judie; and his sister Mary. He is survived by his daughter: Sandra (Drummond) Jahn and husband Mike of Olathe, KS; his son: Doug Bolam and wife Courtenay of Omaha; and his daughter, Rebecca and husband James of Valencia, CA and Omaha. He is also survived by his sisters: Sarah McNeil, and Anne Tagliani of Clemson, SC; and his brother, Charles "Butch" Bolam of Illinois. He had five grandchildren: Alex Bolam of Omaha, Taylor Bolam (Alison) of Vienna VA, Brooke McCollum (Kelson) of Monterey CA, Joseph Drummond of Lincoln NE, and Catie Drummond (Kyle Standiford) of Kansas City; as well as step-grandchildren, Peter and Paul Jahn of Olathe, KS.

He attended Walsh High School in Ottumwa and Creighton University. After earning his B.S. in Biology, he attended the University of Nebraska Medical School and later became a Neonatologist in Omaha. In fact, he was one of the first 300 people to be certified in what was a relatively new field. Over the years, he saved many babies and was an innovator in the field of Neonatology. He was present at the births of white tigers at the Henry Doorly Zoo because he was one of the only people authorized to administer a drug to help save their lives. He was a teacher and mentor of many medical students, residents, and fellows.

He officially retired at age 79, a week before he passed. He was a wonderful dad, grandfather, mentor and doctor. He will be missed, especially by his beloved Pomeranian, Rocky.

MEMORIAL MASS will be held Thursday, July 21, at 11am at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, 11802 Pacific St., Omaha. VISITATION will be Wednesday, July 20, from 6-8pm at Reichmuth Funeral Homes, 21901 W. Maple Rd., Elkhorn. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to The Nebraska Humane Society, or The University of Nebraska Medical Center-Department of Neonatology.

While I haven't worked with Dr. Bolam in many years, I genuinely feel the sting of his passing. He was a consummate physician, educator & mentor whose influence on me as a student continued for the subsequent 44 years -- right up to today. He can never be replaced. May his memory be eternal.

My deepest sympathies and prayers to the friends and family. I was friends with Dave "Rabbit Dr" during the CB Radio days of the 70s-80s. He was a wonderful friend and great influence on a group of radio pioneers. Back in a day when friendships were made by simply talking to someone with a personable voice and demeanor, Dave was just the voice you wanted to hear. I have the fondest memories of Dave and his very young family at the time. Fair winds and flowing seas Dave, you are 10-10 and on the side. May God Bless!

My condolences to the Bolam family. I knew Dave from back in the CB radio days, he was on quite often circa 1978~ into the early 80's, going by the name 'Rabbit Doctor'. I helped raise the antenna at his house in West Omaha.
