OOH RAH, smiling Dave. Plt Cmdr of 81's plt, 1/3 back in the early eighties when it was fun to be a Marine. Great leader and a down to earth guy. Very sad to hear but I know you're in a better place.

I proudly served with Col. Walter when he was a 2nd Lt platoon commander A Co. 3rd Marines Kaneohe Hawaii. He was without a doubt one of the finest Marines I ever served with. RIP Lt. Semper Fidelis

Dave was a great Marine who I was proud to know. Like Larry, I first met him in college and remained in awe of him throughout our careers in the Corps. I just learned of his passing today... very sad. RIP Dave -- you were one of the good ones.

Dave and I served together at The Basic School, 5th Marine Regiment and as students at various points during our careers. He was a truly remarkable leader and an exceptional man. Always cheerful and calm, demanding yet fair with his Marines, and blessed with a wonderful sense of humor, Dave and I shared many laughs together over the years. He was one of those unique men who had a positive impact on others, of all ranks, at each point of his career. My sincere condolences to his family.

Then-Captain David Walter was my Platoon Commander in The Basic School for new officers in 1985 (BOC 4-85). He was an exemplary leader - always fair, calm under pressure, demanding of his young officers, and a Marine you'd follow anywhere. Your tour has ended, Colonel Walter, rest in peace.

Dave Walter was a great battalion commander! Professional, calm, and tactically proficient, he was a leader and a teacher who trusted his Marines. I was fortunate to serve as his operations officer 1999-2000 for a MEU deployment, and learned much from his concise directives, humor under pressure, backbone, and even temper. To Jeanette and the family: God Bless Dave Walter!

Deepest Condolences to all of Dave's Family. First met Dave in '85 at TBS as instructors within the Tactics Branch and later as members of 1st Battalion, 7th Marines from 88-90. Superb Officer but an even better man of character and integrity. I truly consider myself privileged to have know and lived beside Dave Walter. May his Memory give you strength through these very difficult and dark times. RCZ

I served with Dave in A/1/3 in Hawaii in 1979-1981 and in Quantico at TBS in the early 80s. He was one of the standout Lieutenants in our Battalion and a great instructor and SPC at The Basic School. I was so sorry to hear about his illness a couple of years ago and about his passing today. May God bless your family as you remember and grieve his loss. I pray for peace and comfort in the days and months ahead. Semper Fidelis, Tom Hastings

Then Captain Walter was one of my Company Commanders when I served as the CO, 1/7. When he was on watch, I always slept well. He was an extraordinary Officer, and a good man. The success he enjoyed as a Marine was richly deserved. Rest In Peace.

I had the privilege of being the executive officer for Captain Walter. His influence on me lead to my following his footsteps to The Basic School where, I too was an instructor.
Our time together in B 1/7 was significant in my life and I want Mrs Walter and William to know they are in my prayers as is the good Colonel every day with my rosary!
