In a great part I owe my good life to George Payne... he encouraged my father to have me apply for a USN scholarship... his advice is the reason I became a Navy Officer and Naval Aviator. George and Peggy were good friends of my parents....

My deepest sympathies to your family. I am privileged to follow in George's footsteps at the US Department of Commerce office here in Omaha. From the moment of my arrival in Omaha, even after George had retired, he was a mentor and friend. I enjoyed his stories and advice. I know he will be missed by many.

George and family,
Although we never had the pleasure of meeting your Dad, we are confident he must have been a stellar individual. A son often reflects his Dad's values and outlook on life. Your morals, beliefs, loyalty to friends, and zest for life are all great tributes to your Dad. Prayers of peace for you, your Mom and your family.

We wish we could've met your father! He is in a much better place now and probably wanted to spend his 100th birthday with a more angelic crowd! We miss you! Come home soon.

My Condolence to the family of Mr. George Payne. When I saw the beautiful article in todays paper, I was filled with mixed emotions. My father worked as the head chef at the café Mr. Buster Cade (he passed in 1968). The compassion your family showed my family at our time of sorrow will always be appreciated. It is truly a blessing to have your parents be apart of your adult life's. God Bless

I was an impressionable young man when I met Nicholas and George Payne. My mother worked at The Virginia for almost 30 years before it burned down.
I would stop down and visit her most Saturdays. Even at a young age, I couldn't help but notice that the Paynes cared for their employees and treated them like family. Thirty years after it burned down, my mother still warmly remembered the Paynes and The Virginia. George (and Peggy) will be forever remembered for their contributions and kindness.

It was my happy privilege to not only call George my 'boss' when we worked together at The U.S. Department of Commerce but also to call him one of the dearest and best friends I have ever known in the past 77 years. The world is poorer because of George's passing but we are richer for having had him in our lives. May George's memory be eternal and may God comfort George's family and all others who mourn his passing.
