Gregory Filkins Obituary

Gregory Lynn Filkins passed away peacefully in his sleep August, 2025.

At heart, Greg was a blue-collar man, wanted things done the right way, did not pre judge people and wanted the best for children.

Greg was born in Omaha in 1950 and was raised by his mother, Isabella. During his teen years, Greg attended the Abbey Boarding School in Canyon City, CO where he excelled in athletics, received a good education and enjoyed skiing. Shortly after returning to Omaha, he met and married Sherilyn Marrow, with whom he fathered two children: Cory and Derek. Sherilyn's wonderful parents provided Greg with special love and family connection.

During these early family years, Greg worked hard, usually three jobs. He threw hides at the meat packing plant while being an apartment manager to pay rent. He was never late on a bill, paid cash for everything and did any job to support his family of four.

Greg then worked as a lineman with Northwestern Bell, where he attained several promotions and worked for ~ 10 years. Greg then started his own business called National Telecommunications Wiring where he helped businesses design, wire and install phone systems within commercial spaces. Also, during this time he was married to DeAnna (Landon). Greg sold this business in the mid 90's, and effectively retired.

Greg lived the last 25 years or so in Carter Lake, IA. He enjoyed golfing, a conversation at the bar, coffee with the guys and became a motorcycle enthusiast. Greg had very kind neighbors often inviting him to family gatherings and holiday meals. This wonderful group of people demonstrated countless acts of kindness, generosity and concern for his well-being. He was especially fond of the four little boys who lived next door, frequently sharing stories of funny antics and rebellious adventures. To all his neighbors, we are deeply grateful, thank you!!

Cory and Derek agree one of Greg's best parenting stories was taking over the coaching duties of the boys' fledging youth (under 10) baseball team halfway through the season. These young kids, including his own, had very little experience and even fewer victories. However, later that year towards the end of the season, this team of misfits beat the overall top ranked team in the league!

Greg is survived by his two sons, Cory and Derek (Jenny) and two grandsons, Luke and James Filkins.

Greg taught that hard work is critical, giving 100% is best and being your own boss has many challenges and rewards. Pops, may you forever rest in peace.

A casual, open house style, celebration of life will be held at the Carter Lake Improvement Club on Sunday, September 28, from 10:30 - 12:30, with an informal toast around noon. Drinks and snacks provided.

As the holidays are approaching we are remembering all of our memorable holidays with you, Greg. I always joked about getting you to dress up as Santa for the boys. This year will hit different but we will forever and always remember the good times and shenanigans we shared. Including the first Christmas we got you a gift and then watched through the window when I called to tell you to check your portch. Then, later to joke about me wanting to get two tin cans and rope them together so we could communicaye with you anytime we needed to. From a house phone to a cell phone, even. Happy holidays in heaven old man!
