Hugh Cowdin Obituary
December 1, 1930 - January 18, 2025
Dr. Hugh P. Cowdin passed peacefully on Saturday, January 18th. Preceded in death by his first wife of 50 years, Juliette L. Cowdin. He is survived by his five children, Juliette, Hugh Jr., Colleen, Daniel, and Peter; as well as 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. In 2007, Hugh married Catherine Rokes, and is survived by Catherine; and her three children, John, Mark, and Adam; as well as five grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial Saturday, January 25, 2025 at 10 a.m. at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 1920 N. 102nd St., Omaha. Visitation Friday 4 to 6 p.m., with a Wake Service at 6 p.m. at John A. Gentleman Mortuaries, 72nd Street Chapel, and fellowship to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hugh P. and Juliette L. Cowdin Communications Scholarship through the University of Nebraska Foundation.

I was very sorry to hear of Hugh's passing. He was a colleague, friend, and my department chair in the School of Communication at UNO for many years. I always greatly admired his humanity, competence, and kindness in dealing with others. My life has been greatly enriched from knowing Hugh. I am very sorry to hear of his passing, but I will always cherish the wonderful memories I have of him. I always held him up as a wonderful example of a life well lived. He was a great role model for me and many others. Rest in peace, Hugh.

I was very sorry to read about Hugh's death this morning. I took a class from Hugh when I was in graduate school at UNO. Then later, I was the Benefits Manager at UNO. Hugh was one of my favorite retirees. I was so happy to add Catherine to Hugh's retiree benefits as his spouse when they got married in 2007. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
