James Gammon Obituary

Gammon, James Lee
Jun 30, 1941 - Mar 12, 2011
"The Wizard of Bonds", died last weekend from heart complications. Smith's Research and Grading says, "He is one of the most important figures in municipal finance during the past 50 years...simply one of the best buyers in the business - ever." Jim was born and raised in Council Bluffs. He attended Thomas Jefferson HS, graduated from UNO where he was a member of TKE Fraternity. He loved politics, history, and debate. In later years, he loved caring for his yard, going to Broadway shows, reading sci-fi and collecting Steuben glass. Jim worked for General Electric Investment Corp. for 20 years and 9 years as Senior VP and Senior Portfolio Manager at Loews/CNA Holdings, Inc. He then became President of Lebenthal Asset Mngmt. He consistently posted #1 total returns for 1-year, 3-year and 5-year investments, according to Lipper Analytics. He belonged to Municipal Analysts Group of New York and National Federation of Municipal Analysts (earning its Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993). Jim was an inspiration to many; very generous, never asking for thanks or praise. He donated often to Council Bluffs' Broadway Christian Church, Jennie Edmundson Hospital, and other worthy causes. He rejoiced in the success of others, helping people get jobs and mentoring young people. James L. Gammon is survived by his wife of 45 years, Frances, Fairfield, CT; son Matthew, Orlando, FL; mother Hazel; sister Ruth (Ron), Council Bluffs; nephew and niece, Chris Massey, Deborah Ahmad (Nadeem); great nephews, William, Scot, North Richland Hills, TX.
Instead of flowers or cards, the family would like donations sent to Jennie Edmundson Hospital Foundation Memorial for James L. Gammon, 933 East Pierce St., Council Bluffs, IA 51503. Jim spent much time in JEH as a child with asthma; funds will help those with breathing issues.
