I had the privilege of being Dr. Bernthal´s graduate student at UNL in 2001. He was an incredible teacher of the speech-language pathology academic context, but, more importantly, he was a amazing teacher of humility. I´m so appreciative of him during my graduate learning but also as a professional 20 years later. He will be missed.

John was such a stellar person -- always kind and generous and I feel privileged to have known him. The world needs more people like John.

Emeritus Professor John E. Bernthal, PhD, was a giant in the field of children's speech. His contribution and encouragement to speech-language pathologists across the world will always be treasured. https://speakingmylanguages.blogspot.com/2021/07/vale-john-bernthal.html

Marilyn,
I worked with John at the Barkley Center. As Director, he was very helpful and supportive as my colleagues and I worked to develop support programs for UNL students with learning disabilities. We also shared many accounts of our children´s athletic competitions: Brad´s tennis, Kirsten´s volleyball and my sons track, swimming and basketball. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Marilyn and family: Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. John and I worked at the State National Bank in the early 60's as part time employees filing checks and manning the new drive in bank window.

To the Bernthal family......you´ve all been in our prayers for some time now. We, like everyone he came into contact with, absolutely thought the world of your John & it was our honor to know him. Blessings to you all & we´ll see you Thursday.

So sorry to hear about John´s passing. Kirsten, I met your dad years ago on a scholarship committee. He was so pleasant to work with! Of course we talked volleyball, and he was SO proud of you! He will be missed.

We have such fond memories of Marilyn and John supporting their children at all the tennis tournaments so many years ago. You couldn´t ask for nicer people! Our thoughts and prayers are with Kirsten and Brad.
