Dear Judy and Family,
I was so sorry to hear of Larry's passing. I wouldn't have known, but Linda (Haggart) Lofgren passed his obituary on to me. I have so many great memories of playing in the GI High School orchestra and Tri-City Youth Symphony...packing into Larry's little Corvair like sardines, driving to Hastings and Kearney . He really knew his stuff, and he helped me learn to appreciate music even more. I know he will be greatly missed. Now he is at peace.

When my oldest daughter (now a freshman in college) was a fifth grader trying out instruments, Mr Maupin told her "if she tried the violin it would be her dream instrument". He was so right and it has trickled down, I now have three daughters playing violins. He was a wonderful man and with the number of people he inspired, he will probably be remembered as long as Beethoven himself.

I am so very sorry to hear of Mr. Maupin's passing. He was an important part of my life for quite some time: it was my great privilege to play in the orchestra at Grand Island High School and the first years of the Tri-City Youth Symphony. His humor, his patience and his skill as a teacher and orchestral conductor have rarely been matched. While I came to GIHS with a love of music, he helped me broaden, deepen and refine that love to such a great extent, and I will always be grateful. Especially at this time of year, I fondly remember the orchestra's Christmas concerts; they were so much fun. Every time I hear Leroy Anderson's "A Christmas Festival", which was the big number on the concert, I get a tear in the eye; now, there will be another. My condolences to the family; Mr. Maupin will be fondly remembered and greatly missed.

My heartfelt sympathies to the Maupin family. I know Larry gave you a lot of joy just as he gave joy to so many others. My 3 children all enjoyed studying under Larry. He was a true leader and gave inspiration to so many.

A gentle breeze
fell still last night.
It’s warmth
no longer there.
Distant music
faded in the night
Carrying notes
of despair.
Our loss in his absence
settled into sadness
Memories carry the whole share
Quiet now
Listen for his music

Both my sons were students of Larry’s in high school. Both play in their city orchestras and one has the joy of following in Larry’s footsteps by teaching orchestra in public school. Larry’s support of their talent, his humor and love of music nurtured in them a priceless gift. Discovering Larry was a kindred spirit in peace and acceptance of others was a joy for me. I’ll always treasure his having the orchestra perform “Star Trek,” for me. Thank you, Larry.

To the Maupin family my sympathies. Mr. Maupin taught me to play the violin. He was a wonderful teacher.

As I sat last night and listend to my son's orchestra concert, I couldn't help but reflect on the many wonderful memories of having been blessed by having Larry as my music teacher. He always had a smile, and taught me life lessons through music. He showed many parents that even football players "jocks" could do both sports and music. One of the shining bright spots for our mom was when her 7 boys could make it back for the Christmas holiday and play before school started at GISH.
You'll be missed my friend.

Larry was my Concertmaster during my years at Hastings College. He was one of the best music educators the state of Nebraska has ever had and I have many fond memories of him and his work in the Grand Island Public Schools. He will surely be missed and my thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family.

Larry brought music to life for me as part of the GISH and the Tri-City Symphony. I will always remember the Village Inn Christmas breakfasts, the trips, and the many concerts. He was an outstanding educator and will be missed by all.

My deepest sympathies to the entire Maupin family. As a music student of his from 1972 until I graduated in 1980, Mr Maupin did not just teach me how to play the viola, but also how to read the music and feel the emotion of the piece from within, so that I could better express it with my playing.
He was a very kind, calming, temperate soul that had a unique whit that I expect came from his wordly travels. I shall miss him greatly, but the memories of watching him play his violin will always amaze and comfort me. I am so much a better person for having known him.
May you and your family take comfort in knowing that he gave fully of his talents to so many others and made them better from it. I am truely blessed for having been a part of his life. Thank you.

Godspeed Larry... your fairly painless & peaceful passing was well deserved ~ as it was the way you lived. I will miss your consistency, your honesty and love - and especially your Maupin humor!! You have been a shining example of what a man can be - as a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, teacher, citizen and friend. This is the beautiful and precious legacy you leave behind...

Mr. Maupin taught me to be a persussionist, rather than just a drummer, and brought me a better understanding of a form of music, with orchestra, that I may have otherwise ignored. I appreciated his passion for music and as an educator. He will be missed my many generations. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. I hope you find peace knowing he is in a better place enjoying incredible music.

I knew Mr. Maupin as a wonderful conductor as I participated in the Tri-City Youth Symphony from 1986-1989 and also as the fun music loving bus driver when I attended Travel Camp the three summers of my high school years. What a wondefully talented man! I did not even know some of his amazing accomplishments and contributions. My sympathies to the family and my sincere gratitude for sharing him with so many people. I will remember him as a great teacher and man.

Each time I listen to NPR, especially the Fridays by request, I say a quiet thanks to all the work Mr Maupin did to being Public Radio to rural Ne. Each time I would hear a request from "Larry in Grand Island", I would listen intently because I knew he would request something different and new to my limited world. Please know that he touched more people in more ways than can be expressed.

As a previous student that has moved away from Central Nebraska, I would like to say that Larry Maupin was one of the best teachers I have ever had. He was also a pillar of Grand Island and he will be missed greatly.

My sincerest sympathy to all of Larry's family and loved ones. He was such a kind friend when I was battling cancer 8 years ago, and called and came to see me when he was in Omaha. Larry was a great and true friend to me and countless others for over 25 years.
I was blessed to teach with him and see how talented he was. I will miss this wonderful person, teacher, musician, and friend.

Larry was an astounding teacher. He taught our daughter how to play the violin and opened up a world of culture and creativity to her and also to our family. As a fellow teacher, I watched him with wonder as he taught much more than music to hundreds of children. So many of us are grateful for the legacy he has given children, the community, and state of Nebraska. He will be missed. Our family prayers are with you all and know that you are greatly loved by many.
