Michael Smith

1948 - 2025

Michael J. Smith, 77, of Lincoln, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family after a long journey with Alzheimer's disease on December 6, 2025. Born in Lincoln, to Joseph A and Virginia (Hanneman) Smith, Mike was the eldest of four children. He was a proud graduate of Lincoln High School ('66) and attended the University of Nebraska school of Architecture and Southeast Community College in Milford, studying Architecture and Drafting.

In 1971, Mike co-founded Stephens & Smith Construction, with his long-time business partner, Bob Stephens. From its humble beginnings this company grew into one of the region's largest employee-owned construction companies. He retired in 2003 but continued building and tackling projects throughout his retirement. Mike was active in his industry and community, serving on boards for the Home Builders Association, Associated Builders and Contractors, and was instrumental in initiating the Lincoln Public Schools Construction program. Mike and his company received many awards and accolades over the years, including the Lincoln Independent Business Association Business Owner of the Year in 2000. Mike was a proud Lincolnite and completed many building projects in Lincoln, Omaha, and surrounding areas. He was a proud supporter and volunteer for Habitat for Humanity to support members of the community in home ownership.

Mike married Chrisenda (Holt) Smith in 1969, who faithfully joined him in many business ventures. Together, they raised two daughters, Kimberley (Michael) Boyd (Omaha) and Kierstin (Smith) Reed (Lincoln). Mike and Chris enjoyed traveling the world and collecting many antique treasures. This passion flowed into them creating and becoming co-owners of the Aardvark Antique Mall in Lincoln. Mike personally built numerous homes for his family they have enjoyed throughout their lives.

Mike was the proud "Papa" to six grandchildren: Lacy Reyna (Woonsocket, R.I.); Jeremy (Sarah Riha) Boyd (Omaha); Zachary Boyd (Brookings, S.D.); Nicholas Reed, Cpl. Retired USMC (Lincoln); Natalie Reed (Lincoln); and Samuel Reed (Lincoln). He is loved by many in-laws, nieces, nephews and extended family members. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his love of practical jokes and many hours of horseplay.

He is survived by his loving wife, Chris, of over 56 years, his siblings Peggy Buchinni (Clayton, CA); Denice (Harry) LeDuc (Lincoln), and Mark Smith (Lincoln), daughters Kim & Kierstin, son-in-law Mike, grandchildren and extended family members. He was proceeded in death by his parents and other family and friends. Mike has chosen an anatomical donation to support research toward a cure for Alzheimer's.

A celebration of life will be held at a future time determined by the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for a scholarship fund in his name at Southeast Community College or to Habitat for Humanity of Lincoln.
