I had the opportunity to meet with Rudy at his home. He was a very laid back, kind and caring individual. I had a sense that he did not keep up with the world, but rather lived a simple life without the world influences. I know from my dad that he was a talented and hard working person. His legacy will live on in his works here on earth.

All of us have wonderful memories of Uncle Rudy Petrmichl. I think the one that has stayed with me through time was his equal and fair treatment of nieces and nephews. After being left out of an extended family event involving a baseball game from the other side of my family, I seemed to fully understand my second class status as a female in this world. I was probably no more than 8 or 9 years old at the time. I doubt that anyone knew how strongly that negative experience affected me. Shortly after, I learned that Uncle Rudy was taking a fishing trip. As he arrived to pick up the kids, I assumed that I was not welcome. He looked at me and said, "Aren't you going with us, Barbie?" I was shocked and delighted. Of course I wanted to spend an afternoon with my uncle, brothers and male cousins. And even though I never figured out how to get the fish off, I could put worms on hooks as good as any old boy. That important day and all the baseball practice that Uncle Rudy exposed his poor old back to when we had family gatherings changed my life and continues to help me contend with many life challenges.

Uncle Rudy was the best uncle that a young boy who loved baseball could ever have. He always made me feel that I could be the next great Cub or Cardinal pitcher. We will miss him greatly, however all of our lives are better after knowing him.
