I loved Sam's sense of humor: He was mowing his lawn when a passer-by asked him "How much do you charge?" His reply "I get to sleep with the Lady of the House!"

When I came to Lincoln as Schramm Professor in 1987 Sam could not have been more helpful, supportive and welcoming. I treasured his friendship then and in subsequent years.

On a personal note Sam and his wife lived down the street from my mother and one of their sons delivered her newspapers. She thought very highly of him and always wanted that remembered to Sam. Over the years virtually every time I saw Sam he asked about my mother.

Dr. Treves had an enormous influence for the graduates in geology from UNL, myself among them. His leadership and guidance of the department plus teaching were outstanding. He will be greatly missed by everyone. I will miss seeing him at the meetings of the Alumni Board and banquet.

Sam was Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, when he greeted me at the interview for the hydrogeology position in the department. I always associated his short-sleeve all-season white shirts with his Antarctic research. Sam was supportive colleague, with superb sense of humor. He will be missed by many whose lives he touched.

Sam was a wonderful mentor to me in my early years at UNL, and he set the stage for many positive developments for the Department of Geology and the College of Arts & Sciences. His work to establish the Geology Alumni Board was especially insightful. I'll always remember his robust laugh, his enthusiasm for igneous rocks, and his tales of the early years in Antarctic research.

Dr. Treves was a singular human being and a man among men. He was a fine teacher and a great positive influence on many young minds. He leaves an indelible mark in which his family should take great pride. I know that my professional life has been richer for having known him and I will miss him greatly.
