Steve and I were at times best friends growing up in Lyons, Nebraska. My family left Lyons when I was 14, so I had only seen Steve at class reunions after that. I was totally amazed at all the wonderful things which were said about Steve by family, friends and coworkers.

One of the first adventures I remember with Steve occurred where Clear Lake would have been located before the Logan was straightened. We came across a huge snapping turtle and were able to hold it down on the dried mud bottom. He was excited about having turtle soup, but we had no way of killing the turtle. Steve left to get a knife and I was supposed hold the turtle down. By the time Steve got back, I was exhausted, the turtle escaped into the water and Steve was upset with me for not holding on.

Another time we were on the Old Logan with a small boat my brother had outgrown. It was basically a triangle with wheels attached in back and the front could be tied on the back of your bicycle for transporting. We were fishing on the Logan and heading back home when we got stuck in some fallen trees in the creek. With only one paddle we tried to break loose and time and time again we failed. Finally Steve figured out that the anchor line was out and preventing us from making progress.

I only remember catching bullheads in the old Logan and only one was ever big enough to keep. So we drug a 30 gallon empty oil barrel home from the Skelly Station. We filled it with water and about a dozen 2-3 inch bullheads so they could grow into big bullheads. Did not turn out well! After two weeks the entire neighborhood stunk, and I was tasked with cleaning it up.

We also fished the lagoon in the Lyons Park. I never remember catching anything other than carp, bullheads, an occasional turtle and crawfish which made good bait. One year we ran throw lines along the South side of the Lagoon where the road goes up high along Duane Pearson’s farmland. At one point we had more than a dozen going at once. We would listen for fish flopping and then checked the lines. We were quite successful and tried to sell our catch to Bob Smith at the grocery store. He would not buy anything not alive. Our bait was corn, from Duane Pearson’s corn field.

In later years we were both in Boy Scouts together. I remember the Indian dances and preforming in the Fremont City Auditorium, which has not changed. In the end Steve was one troop leader and I was the other troop leader. I made it to Star rank before leaving Lyons, and that ended scouting for me. It was great hearing that Steve and his brother Chuck both made Eagle Scout!
