Eugene Pavone Obituary

MATTHEWS, N.C. - Eugene C. "Gene" Pavone Sr., 82, of Matthews, N.C., and formerly of Canastota, passed away peacefully on Friday, Oct. 22, 2010, at the home of his daughter, Betsy Kinslow, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on Oct. 25, 1927, in Canastota, the son of Concetto and Grace Wilder Pavone.
Gene lived in Canastota most of his life, graduating from Canastota High School in 1945. He later lived in Cicero for eight years, moving to North Carolina in 2008.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Merchant Marines.
Gene owned and operated Pavone's Home Decorating Store for 32 years, starting in Canastota and later moving to Oneida, retiring in 1994.
He was a past member and president of the Canastota Lions Club; a founding member and past president of the Canastota Canal Town Corporation; a former member of the E. Bart Hanifin Council No. 473 Knights of Columbus, and the Edward A. McDowell Association 4th Degree Color Corps. of Oneida; a current member of the Bishop Cunningham Council 10904 Knights of Columbus, and a 4th Degree member of the Bishop Joseph T. O'Keefe Assembly No. 2663 of Cicero; and he had been a Boy Scout Master. Gene loved to play Bocce, belonging to leagues in Canastota, Rome and Cicero. He was also a member of the Cicero Senior Center.
Gene was a member of St. Agatha's Church in Canastota, and later Sacred Heart Church in Cicero.
He was very proud of his large family and enjoyed family celebrations. Gene was a "people person" and will be missed by many.
Gene married Ann Bartholomew on Sept. 20, 1947 in Canastota. Ann died on Sept. 24, 1993.
Surviving are: two sons, Eugene C. Pavone, Jr. (Roberta) of Concord, N.C., and Michael F. Pavone (Jane) of Matthews, N.C.; five daughters, MaryAnne Dale (Ted) of Indian Trail, N.C., Kathleen Devine of Charlotte, N.C., Christine Bargabos (David) of Chittenango, Betsy Kinslow (Steve) of Matthews, N.C., and Nancy Shelly (Mike) of Clermont, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Gene was predeceased by a granddaughter, Jody Lee Bargabos; a sister, Gwen Grossman; and a brother, Richard Brophy.
Funeral services will be held 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at St. Agatha's Church, Canastota, where a funeral Mass will be held. The Rev. Kevin J. Corcoran, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Agatha's Cemetery, Canastota. A luncheon for family and friends will begin at noon Saturday at the American Legion Post No. 140, 325 S. Peterboro St., Canastota. The family will receive friends on Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, 201 James St., Canastota. In his memory, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105, or Hospice and Palliative Care, Charlotte Region, 1420 E. Seventh St., Charlotte, N.C. 28204, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
