Charles Williams Obituary

Athens - Athens, Ga. Charles 'Coach Charlie' C. Williams, 86, of Athens, died at his home on August 28, 2003. Bridges Funeral Home of Athens is in charge of arrangements.
Services will be grave side at Oconee Hill Cemetery at 9:30 AM Saturday with the Rev. Wesly Stephens officiating. Following grave side a Celebration of Life service will be held at the First Methodist Church chapel at 11:00 AM. Family will receive friends after the service.
Coach Charlie was born on Oconee Street in Athens on Bastille Day, July 14, 1917 the only son of Charles E Williams who later became the chief of the Athens Fire Department. While at Athens High School he was captain of the football team graduating in 1935. After one year at Georgia Military College he transferred to UGA and played under Coach Wally Butts graduating in 1939.
During WW2 he was head football coach at Athens High School when it was located on Prince Avenue. He always joked about having the parents pool their gas ration stamps for out of town games. After coaching he became an Athens businessman retiring in 1988. During his retirement years he traveled extensively in the United States and Europe. He interest included studying the history of his Native American ancestors and Bartholomen Stovall of Surry County, England. Coach Charlie, a life long member of Athens YMCA, was an advocate of healthy eating and exercise.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou Cross Williams. Survivors include a son, Budge, of Athens; a daughter Paulette Williams of Decatur; a grandson Keith of Athens; a grand daughter in law Christy of Athens; and two great grand children.
Honorary pallbearers are Morgan Redwine, Rufus Paine, Charle 'Ed' Greenway, Frank E. Cash, Charles Applebaum, and Keith Williams.
Bridges Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
