Charlotte Mauldin Obituary

Charlotte Kissel Floyd Mauldin, 90, went home to the Lord suddenly, but peacefully, on Thanksgiving morning, November 23, 2017, leaving family and friends unexpectedly stunned, but forever grateful for her kind spirit and life of giving and loving. Charlotte was born on January 19, 1927 to Annie Seagraves and George Washington Floyd. She was the widow of Harold M. Mauldin and was predeceased by her sister, Margaret.

While born in Madison County, GA, Charlotte was raised in Athens where she attended Athens High School, graduating at age 16 in 1943. Following, she received her nursing degree in 1947 from Georgia Baptist School of Nursing, serving as a Cadet Nurse during school, and later working as a Registered Nurse for a number of years in Georgia, Louisiana and Arkansas. She met her husband, Harold, when he returned home from the war and attended the University of Georgia in Athens. They married on June 30, 1949 and were together for 65 years before his passing. Through Harold's work with the U.S. Public Health Service, they lived in a number of states (Louisiana, Arkansas, Michigan and North Carolina) as well as Puerto Rico, before he was transferred in 1963 to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta. It was in Atlanta on the north side near what is now "Spaghetti Junction" that they raised their family and lived for the rest of their lives. With the birth of her children, Charlotte's service as a nurse ended and her service to her family began. She absolutely and unconditionally loved her family, near and far, immediate and extended.

Charlotte was a strong woman of God serving her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through her devotion to her family, church and community. Her simple advice to many during their difficult times: "You know who you can always talk to (God)." At the age of 12, on her own, she joined Young Harris Methodist Church which was then located around the corner from their home in the Boulevard area of Athens. For over 50 years, Charlotte was a faithful member of the Embry Hills United Methodist Church serving in various roles and committees with the church. She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Women, the Harding Sunday School class and a number of church circles, most recently the Shiners Circle. She was known far and wide for her cooking and when she was still able, would deliver food to church members anytime the call went out. She contributed incessantly and without hesitation to many, many bake sales and fundraisers. Her pound cake was a big seller, and when she donned it with old fashioned caramel icing using the recipe of her dearest friend, Francis McKinney, it was a family and crowd favorite. Along with Harold, Charlotte was an avid bridge player. Through the years, she remained a steadfast fan of the Atlanta Braves and the UGA Bulldogs. For many years, she and Harold volunteered regularly at the United Methodist Children's Home and at Simpsonwood Retreat Center. After Harold's retirement, the two of them traveled extensively throughout the United States and around the world. They were particularly involved with the 401st Eighth Army Air Force Bomb Group Association of which Harold was an active member, attending many reunions and meetings of that group over the years in the United States and overseas.

Charlotte is survived by her children, Kathie Shepard (Steve), Harold Jr., Ken (Alley), Vernon (Joli); her grandchildren Brooke Shepard Baker (Joel), Whitney Shepard, Mallory Shepard, Melissa Mauldin, Kevin Mauldin, Chase Mauldin, Grace Mauldin, Juliette Mauldin, Georgina Mauldin, Nick Mauldin, Noelle Mauldin, Jake Mauldin; three great-grandchildren, Grant, Jackson and Ellie Baker; two sisters, Betty Ann Willyard, Hull, and Barbara Jean Napoli, Tampa, Fla.; and two brothers, Richard T. Floyd, Lake Wales, Fla. and Wayne Floyd, Hull.

Visitation will be at A.S. Turner Funeral Home in Decatur, GA. on Wednesday, November 29th from 6:00-7:30 PM. The funeral will be held at Embry Hills United Methodist Church, Chamblee, GA. on Thursday, November 30th at 10:30 AM, with visitation at the church for an hour preceding. Following a brunch reception, burial will be the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA. at 2:00 PM. Pallbearers will be Chase, Nick and Jake Mauldin, Richard Sheffield, Rob and Jordan Floyd, Joel Baker and Albert Bolet.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Embry Hills United Methodist Church. A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home & Crematory.
