Eleanor Eberhardt Obituary

Athens - Eleanor Bailey Eberhardt, 94, of Athens, passed away Monday, March 9, 2009.
Born in Douglas, Ga., on July 10, 1914, she was the daughter of William Henry Bailey and Ella McLendon Bailey. Mrs. Eberhardt was educated in the public schools of Douglas, graduated from South Georgia College and earned a B.A. degree from Georgia State Women's College in Valdosta. She began her teaching career in a Nashville, Ga., high school, where she taught English, French and history. Her marriage to L.W. "Hoop" Eberhardt in 1938 carried her to Swainsboro, Soperton, Tifton and finally to Athens in 1946.
Mrs. Eberhardt was a member of First Baptist Church of Athens where she was a faithful member of the Jenkins Sunday School Class. She later joined a mission group from First Baptist to organize the Milledge Avenue Baptist Church. She remained at Milledge Avenue Baptist until the new sanctuary was completed, then returned to First Baptist.
Mrs. Eberhardt was a longtime, active member of the University Woman's Club, serving as President in 1965. She also served twenty years as a Red Cross Volunteer at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Her great interest, other than home and family, has been flowers -- growing, sharing and enjoying them. She was an active and loyal member of the Bobbin Mill Garden Club.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Lint and Alice Eberhardt of Spartanburg, S.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Guy B. and Melanie Eberhardt of Macon, Ga.; grandchildren, Guy Bailey Eberhardt of Macon, Ga., Susan Eberhardt Kennedy of Macon, Ga., Dr. Linton Eberhardt of Atlanta, Ga., and Laura Eberhardt Stille of Spartanburg, S.C.; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m., Thursday, March 12, at First Baptist Church of Athens with Dr. Jon Appleton officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service in the Branyon Foyer.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 355 Pulaski St., Athens, GA 30601.

Dear Lint, Alice, Laura and Linton,
My thoughts and prayers are with you all. What a joy "Grandmother" was to spend time with! She was my surrogate grandparent while I lived in Athens away from home, and she always treated me like family... Just like you all always have! I know she will be missed.

I was fortunate enough to have Mrs. Eberhart as my kindergarten teacher, and then as as a lifelong friend at First Baptist Church. She was one of the most gracious ladies I ever met. We were blessed by her presence among us. My love to all of you,

I feel so blessed to have had an "Aunt Eleanor". She was the embodiment of a lady to all who knew her. I will always remember her grace, her spontaneous laugh, and her incredible memory & recounting of the fun times of her childhood, the fishing club, and the boyhood of Lint & Guy. We will miss her! Our deepest sympathy, Joan Bailey Raulerson and husband, Wayne Raulerson.
