Lee Rampey Obituary

Denver 'Lee' Rampey Jr., 70, passed away on Monday, April 2, 2012, at his home. Mr. Rampey was born April 4, 1941, in Elberton, to the late Denver Lee Rampey Sr. and Ruby Blackmon Rampey.
He had recently retired as general counsel for Southeastern Power Administration, in Elberton, where for 31 years he took great pride in his work. For 40 years, Mr. Rampey provided his legal expertise for the United States Federal Government.
Mr. Rampey graduated from Elbert County High School in 1959 and was a member of the 1956 Blue Devil Region Championship Team. He received his undergraduate degree from Emory University and attended the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University, where he received his Bachelor of Law in 1968.
He served as both the U.S. Attorney and Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia, practiced law with the late Peyton S. Hawes Sr. of Elberton, and was a partner with Nunn, Geiger, & Rampey in Warner Robins and Perry.
Mr. Rampey was an avid cattleman at the family farm in Elberton for more than 35 years, where he spent many evenings and weekends aboard his tractor.
He was very proud of his service to the United States Marine Corps from 1962 to 1965 as an Artillery, Embarkation and Intelligence Officer.
Mr. Rampey was a passionate observer of current events, especially those relating to politics. He enjoyed traveling with his family, and took great pleasure in planning trips and excursions that resulted in many wonderful adventures. His grandchildren were his greatest source of joy, and he marveled as each reached the special milestones of life. He was a kind and loving man who did not know many strangers.
Mr. Rampey is survived by Irene Marlow of Bowman, to whom he was devoted for 25 years. He deeply loved his three daughters and son, Jennifer Paire (Chris), of Canton, Melissa Collins (Jason), of Hull, Melanie Travis (Jeff), of Charleston, Tenn., and Jason Marlow (Andrea), of Elberton. His beloved grandchildren include Mallory Baston, of Athens, Ashley Albright, of Linwood, N.J., Alex Marlow, of Elberton, Cole Collins and Clint Barksdale, of Hull, Brady and Lucy Paire, of Canton, and Ryann Travis, of Charleston, Tenn. He is also survived by Judy Rampey, of Charleston, Tenn.
Funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 7, in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home, with the Revs. Gary Purvis and Bill Hayes officiating. Burial will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Friday.

Lee Rampey was a thoughtful and considerate man with a great sense of humor. I knew him as a lawyer in Warner Robins and then as the U.S. Attorney in Macon. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I knew Lee as a partner in the firm of Justice Peyton Hawes. They associated me for title work in Oconee County for several years. He was a gentleman and had a distinguished career.

Lee Rampey was a fine lawyer, gentleman and friend. Although Lee always took his responsibilities and duties with due regard and seriousness, he also had a great sense of humor. He always treated others with respect. I will always treasure the memories of the times I had the pleasure and privilege of working with him while he served as United States Attorney.

Lee Rampey was a good man who respected the law and served his country faithfully. His kindness and sense of humor always tempered his judgments as U. S. Attorney. He will be missed.
