Todd Nance Obituary

Brother Todd Alton Nance passed away on August 19, 2020, in Athens, Georgia, at 57. His death leaves an irreplaceable void in anyone's life who knew him. Todd's musical accomplishments render him insured beyond the grave.

Todd ranked as a musician of the highest order. His excellent musical aptitude and grounded personality accentuated his impenetrable sense of time. He also counted as a generous soul to friends and strangers alike. His graceful persona personified the definition of laid back.

He grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee, playing music with his close friend Michael Houser. Todd soon moved to Atlanta. He reconnected musically with Michael Houser a few years later in Athens and they eventually became two of the four founding members of Widespread Panic.

Todd played drums, wrote songs and traveled with Widespread Panic all over the globe for 30 years. He recorded and performed with some of the world's most talented musicians.

Although he is gone, he will always live on through the music, but there is no doubt the world will be a dimmer place without his shining presence.

Survivors include wife, Tammy Nance; mother, Evelyn McKay; brother, Rodney Nance and his wife Essie; aunts, Carol Krider-Burkett, Ila Garrett and Peggy Berry; uncle, Don Nance, lots of cousins; mother-in-law, Julia Martin, and in-laws Craig, Tonya, Miranda, Jack and Ansley Calhoun.

Donations can be made in Todd's memory to Nuci's Space, www.nuci.org or to Harrison United Methodist Church, [email protected]

You will be missed as always there for so many ways not only for the spirit you put in the air with all the music you played , but as a person who always left his musical ego at the door. He always asked about how family , friends, and relatives were doing ,and not just ask but listening with care in his eyes everytime . YYR ... AND ... RIP...
Was always laughing and putting a smile on all faces around EVERYDAY...

He was the greatest. I toured with Panic for 2 5 yrs and saw them first time 97. When Mikey passed...we barely recovered. Then Todd left and my heart was in pieces...now to know I'll never hear his beautiful soulful drums again breaks my heart. RIP sir..you deserve pure happiness for all the happiness you gave us. I love you and will always dance to drums and think of you.

One thing that really sucks about fame is that takes your friends away in service to the wider world, and that's what happened for me when fame came knocking at WSP's door.We all grew up together in and around the Uptown Lounge "back in the day". We had some great times at there place on King Ave. after those Monday night shows. The most memorable jam for me was in that kitchen with Tinsley Ellis, and Crumpy.Todd was such calm and peaceful dude, always. I remember one particular night when I went with them to a show in Atlanta at a place called the Ice House. I had been in a major depression for a year-and-a-half under the influence of a particular substance that opened me up in really nice way to talking again. I believe it was me Todd, Gomer, and Sam who rode back to Athens together that night. I talked my head off, regaling them with stories from my past and I don't know what all. When we got back to King Ave. Todd and Gomer continued very patiently to listen and laugh me into the wee hours. I never got a chance to tell Todd how much that night meant to me. Thanks Todd!!! My heart is heavy for all you friends and family, and all the WSP family as well. Much love to you all. Bill O.
