Walter Welchel

Walter Welchel, 72, died Friday, May 23, 2025, at MUSC Health Columbia Medical Center.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, May 27, 2025 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Rev. Clay Waldrip officiating. The family received friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday in the vestibule of the church. Interment was private.
Born Feb. 23, 1953, in Chester, S.C., Walter was a son of the late Gordon Welchel and Ruth Hancock Howard. He was a graduate of Chester High School and retired from Custom Remodeling as owner and operator. Walter was an accomplished striper fisherman and he loved boating. He was of the Baptist Christian faith.
He is survived by his wife of over 47 years, Vickie Lynn Doolittle Welchel; two children, Jessica Annette Johnston (Louis) of Gilbert, S.C. and Joseph Alexander Welchel (Amy) of McConnells, S.C.; two grandchildren, Sophia Belle Johnston and Hoyt Elijah Johnston, both of Gilbert, S.C.; two brothers, Clarence Gordon Welchel (Karen) of Rock Hill, S.C. and Tommy Howard of Chester, S.C.; one sister, Dianne Jordan of Chester, S.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his brother, Randy Welchel, and his stepfather, Harry Howard.
