Bill Tyzz-Dwo Lu

1942 - 2021

Early Wednesday morning, February 10, 2021, Bill Tyzz-Dwo Lu, loving husband and father of two sons, passed away at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital at the age of 78 after succumbing to the effects of COVID-19. Bill was born on September 10, 1942 in Shanghai, China to Ching X. Lu and Jane Yang Lu. After earning his undergraduate degree in civil engineering at National Taiwan University, he journeyed to the United States in 1965 to continue his studies at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Upon receiving his master's degree from Duke, he went on to earn his doctorate in civil engineering from Caltech in Pasadena, California in 1973. Over a distinguished 30+ year career as a Geotechnical Engineer, Bill worked on many technically demanding projects including undertaking the role of lead soil engineer for the L.A. Metro Blue Line construction as well as the Ocean Trail Landslide Restoration Project. He raised two sons, Darren and Calvin, with his first wife Teresa. On May 31, 1992, he married Nancy Liu. They lived happily together in Huntington Beach, California for 28 years. Known for his quick wit, infectious smile, and his kind and compassionate spirit, Bill enjoyed a very active and robust life. He had a passion for cooking and frequent international travel with his wife Nancy. Over the years, they criss-crossed the world visiting dozens of countries. While they enjoyed anywhere they went together, some of their favorite destinations were Petra, Jordan; Santorini, Greece; and Barcelona, Spain. Once the pandemic put a damper on their travel adventures, they still enjoyed daily walks and each other's company. Bill is survived by his wife Nancy, his two children, Darren and Calvin, his step-daughters, Helen and Chris, and his brother Tzu Chiau. He was preceded in death by his brother, Tyzz-Gan, his father, Ching, and his mother, Jane. There will be a small memorial for immediate family members only. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to your favorite charity in Bill's name.
