Jo Lynne Cooper-Nearing
May 10, 1954 - May 2, 2018
Jo Lynne Cooper-Nearing passed from stroke complications with friends and family by her side May 2, 2018.
One of four children of Kirk and Betty (Waldowski) Cooper, Jo is survived by her three brothers, Kirby Cooper of Portland, Scott Cooper of Madras, Devin (Allison) Cooper of Canby; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and step-children.
During Jo's childhood, the Coopers moved from Arcata, Calif., to Tacoma, Wash., and then to Portland, when Jo Lynne was 10. It was at the Cooper's home on Mt. Scott that Jo was able to develop her love of horses and horse riding. Jo graduated from John Adams High School in 1971. After High School Jo moved to Seattle where she graduated from the University of Washington with a BA and then earned a law degree from the University of Puget Sound.
Throughout Jo's adult life she developed a wide-range of interests and businesses. While living in Seattle, Jo performed volunteer work for the ACLU and opened 'Specific Gravity' crystal shop on Capitol Hill. Upon returning to Portland, she started a new venture 'American Vintage Trading Company', an online vintage clothing business. Jo dabbled in horticulture and served on the Board of the Lents Neighborhood Association.
A devout Nichiren Shoshu Buddhist for over 40 years, Jo's practice helped her with her own spiritual enlightenment as well as that of others. Jo Lynne remained altruistic throughout, enabling her to touch many lives.
A Memorial Celebration will be held from 1 to 5 p.m., Saturday, June 16, 2018, at The Lakeside Gardens at 16211 S.E. Foster Road in Portland. All are welcome to attend. Donations may be made to the Oregon 4-H Foundation or the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon.
