Mary Wert Obituary

Wert, Mary M. 94 March 08, 1917 June 16, 2011 Mary Wert, an extraordinary woman who led an extraordinary life...Mary was born and raised in New England, N.D. In 1935 she married Joe Wert and they moved to Sherwood, Ore., where they raised seven children. They have 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren. Mary was a very busy Mom and involved in many social and community activities including the VFW, Kiwanis, PTA President, a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and a Red Cross blood donor. She was a devout Catholic and participated in many church groups. Mary was an excellent cook, cake decorator and loved gardening. She excelled in sewing, knitting, tatting and crocheting. She was a 4-H leader and taught adult education classes at Portland Community College. She worked for Portland Canning Co., sold Avon and Amway, was a teacher's aide at Hopkins Elementary School and a head cook at the Sherwood Senior Center. Mary and Joe opened their home and sponsored many foreign exchange students while living in Sherwood. Joe and Mary were crowned King and Queen of the Sherwood Onion Festival in October 1989. Joe passed away in January 1990 at age 77. In 1994 Mary sold the Sherwood home and moved to the King City home she had purchased earlier from her mother, Katie Herberholz. She took great pride tending to her gardens, enjoyed daily walks and always kept busy helping others. In January 2009, Mary moved to Cedar Creek Assisted Living facility in Sherwood. She greeted new residents with her warm big smile and would show them around and make them feel comfortable. She was able to walk to St. Francis Catholic Church and enjoyed working with the "Quilters" at the church hall every Wednesday morning. The quilts are made for babies born at Coffee Creek Women's Correctional Facility in Wilsonville. In December 2010 she moved to Cedar Crest Memory Care facility, as she was having difficulty using her walker as her memory declined. Mary's children are very grateful for the tender care that she received. She was loved and respected. In May 2011, Hospice Care of the Northwest managed Mary's care due to many falls and weight loss. Oh Momma, I miss you so very much. I am so thankful for the beautiful relationship we had for so many years. Thank you for being such a good example of a Good Christian. I asked God long ago to forgive me for some of my sins, but I couldn't forgive myself. I am learning to listen to God more and I feel your presence to help me grow stronger in my Catholic faith. Love Forever, your baby girl.

So sorry to hear of your loss. We were out of town and missed the service. We will also miss Mary. She was so active in so many places. We first met her when she and Joe and their little band played for dances at Gibbs. That goes way back. Our paths crossed many times. In sympathy.

I will never forget the luscious strawberry whipped cream cake that Mary prepared with love for the Sherwood Middle School teachers back in the Good Old Days. Smiles stretched from hall to hall. Many happy memories to your entire family. God bless

I am so sorry for your loss. I was hoping to attend the service today but I cannot because my foot is worse so totally off of it again. What a pleasure it was to know Mary over the years and to have heard her stories of so many things and from so many people whose life she has touched many of who are no longer here and others that have known her since they were small. She held a very special spot in the town of Sherwood and in our hearts she will be missed. Thankfully she will carry on through the wonderful family that she has left behind that has so many of her special traits. My love and thoughts are with you all.

Absolutlely a great role model for all of us to admire and respect. She had her smile as a trade mark to her personality. She always had a kind word or quick wit to share where ever she went.

Mary, the times we spent together with John were very special to me. I especially enjoyed learning first-hand from you as to how "you" make your famous (and absolutely delicious--the best I've ever had) apple strudel. I know you'll never stop watching down on your beautiful and loving family. My warmest thoughts for the family. ~Dawn Wilson

As I watched Mary while she was living at Cedar Creek, I was reminded of the lyrics from Pass It On "...I want the world to know, The Lord of love has come to me, I want to pass it on...". Mary was a blessing to all the lives she touched at Cedar Creek.

Condolences and deepest sympathy to all the family of Mrs. Wert. I remember her as a friendly outgoing person full of energy and love of life. She was a daily Mass attendee and routinely brought Eucharist to shut-ins. Her joy came from within, a soul filled with the love of God. She was a role model for many beyond her family and circle of friends. She will be missed.
