I have fond memories of Baxter from my youth. My dad Dennis worked for him at Phillips Pipeline. Dad really liked working for Baxter.

Godspeed,

Please accept our sympathy in the loss of your father. I worked for Baxter for many years in Phillips Pipe Line and have nothing but good memories.

I got a morning call recently from a high school classmate, Ned Biddix, who gave me the sad news that our dear fellow classmate and friend Baxter Thorman had passed away.

The first thing Ned and I said to each other upon news was “Baxter was really one of the good guys.” He was always in the middle of things we did—both the worthy and the mischievous unworthy. Baxter was always fun, with a sharp wit and a constant smile. His delightful personally never changed over the years. Just to stir some memories, I frequently glimpse over our yearbook after learning of the loss of one of our buddies. I did so upon hearing about Baxter and recalled I was with him playing in the band and in playing football, but I failed to compete with his selection into the National Honor Society.

Baxter’s delightful, playful personally and wit made him fun to be around. He actively wrote to classmates and frequently expressed his heartfelt sympathies when they passed. He told me many times that he deeply appreciated being able to hear about his classmates.

Baxter and his beloved wife Bobbie(who passed in May of 2008) had lives of impressive dedication, service, philanthropy and accomplishment. With a B.S. in mechanical engineering and an MBA, he had careers in shipbuilding and with Phillips Petroleum. Bobbie held positions in aerospace and computer science. They also had two daughters
and Baxter was an active leader in his Christ Redeemer Lutheran Church, as well as a major supporter of Tulsa University.

Baxter was one of the core people that gave our Class of 1953 a special exuberance and lighthearted spirit. A life of unusual quality from one of the “good guys.” We will miss him terribly and will cherish memories of those fun-loving happy days.
