Carolyn Cornelius Obituary
PETREY 93, passed away July 10, 2010, at the home of her daughter, Dr. Catherine P. Cornelius, in Avon Park, Florida. She was born April 21, 1917, in Petrey, Alabama, to Henry Grady and Susie Robinson Petrey. Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers Roderick and Karl, and her husband of 66 years, Thomas Burch Cornelius. Raised in Haines City, Florida, she also lived in Zephyrhills, Dade City, Gainesville, Madison, Wauchula, Tampa and Sanford. She enjoyed participating in the Garden Club, Woman's Club, UDC, Daughters of the American Revolution and the First United Methodist Church. She was graduated from Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham, Alabama and also attended the University of Florida. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Catherine P. Cornelius; her son, Dr. William B. Cornelius (Mary); her brothers Roger A. and Harry G.
Petrey; her sister Katherine P.
Minor; her grandsons William B., Robert B. (Kristen), and Richard B. Cornelius; two great-grandchildren Noah B. and Elijah K. Cornelius, and numerous nieces and nephews. Carolyn will be remembered for her charm, beauty, and quick wit. A memorial service will be planned for a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the T. Burch and Carolyn P. Cornelius Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the South Florida Community College Foundation, Inc. 19 East Main Street, Avon Park, Florida 33825. Arrangements were entrusted to the Stephenson-Nelson Funeral Home of Avon Park, Florida.

Mom lived a long and useful life guiding our development with her high standards, love of family, and quick wit. Twelve of her "retirement" years were spent totally devoted to Dad's care and his struggles with Alzheimer's only to have her fall victim to the same disease several years later. I pray that the family, and especially the grandchildren, can look past those trying years and remember the Carolyn that we knew. May she finally rest in peace. Catherine

My love and condolences on the death of your mom. What wonderful memories we all have of the Petrey family. I am so proud to be a Petrey and of the aunts, uncles, and cousins I have. I know Aunt Caroline loved her children and grandchildren very much and she was so proud of them. She will certainly be missed.

We lost a very important family member and a fine southern lady. We were all fortunate to have known her and to have our lives influenced by her intelligence and grace. I also recall a very good since of humor. God bless her.
