Earl Crittenden Obituary

CRITTENDEN, EARL M. "DUKE" passed away Aug. 31, 2009. Born on Aug. 30, 1930, in what was then known as the Conway Section of Orlando, Duke was a life long Orlando resident devoted to his family, his community of friends, his citrus industry colleagues, his Gators and his fellow Gator Fans. Duke graduated from Orlando High School in 1948 and The University of Florida in 1953. Having obtained his degree in Agriculture, Duke began his career in the citrus industry working with Shine Hardman. In 1959, Duke formed Crittenden Fruit Company, Inc., and built it into one of the largest fresh fruit operations in FL. After selling the fresh fruit operation in 1983, Duke retained ownership of his family's citrus groves and real estate, and he continued his leadership in the Silver Springs Citrus co-operative, helping to guide it through its conversion to a stock company and accomplishing unprecedented sales of $200 Million by 1984. Up to the time of his death, Duke stayed passionately involved with citrus, real estate development and service to his community. In addition to his leadership in the Citrus Industry, Duke has been a life-long pillar of his community and a friend to many. In addition to his devotion to family, friends and The Gators, Duke served our community as a member of the Florida Citrus Commission, Chairman of the Growers Administrative Committee, Chairman of the Republican Party of Florida, as a member of the Boards of the Central Florida Fair, Florida Citrus Sports Association, ABC Liquors, Inc. and The Lake Highland Preparatory School Foundation. Duke also took great pride in his community involvement as a member of the Central Florida Gator Club, The Citrus Club, Elks Club, Florida Citrus Mutual, O'l Timers Men's Club of Orange County, Orange County Regional History Center, Orlando Remembered, Orlando Touchdown Club, Gathering of Men and The University Club. An avid golfer for many years of his life, Duke was a Charter and life-long member of Rio Pinar Country Club. Duke was a tireless champion and fan of his beloved Florida Gators. One of Duke's proudest "Gator" moments was his role working with Marshall Criser and Charlie Pell in raising the development funds necessary to begin construction of the skyboxes and the renovation of Florida Field, thus helping to propel the Gators into the National college football spotlight. Duke was a charter member of the University of Florida Bull Gators, served on the Board of the University of Florida Foundation and served as President of the University of Florida Gator Boosters. In light of his passion for Gator football, it was an especially fitting honor for Duke to be inducted into Florida Blue Key along with Tim Tebow and Urban Meyer. Duke is survived by the Love of His Life for 46 years, Helen. Duke and Helen shared not only their lives but also their mutual passions for golf, the Tennessee mountains, New Smyrna Beach, their children ;and especially their grand-children, Devan and Darren. Duke is also survived by his sons, Earl M. Crittenden, Jr. and Brian Crittenden; his brother, Charles Rowe
Crittenden; his nephew, Ronnie Kirkland; and his other beloved nieces; nephews; cousins; and in-laws. Duke was predeceased by his parents, Charles Franklin and Emma Pearl
Crittenden; his brothers,
William "Stan" Crittenden, James Henry Crittenden, Edward "Pete" Crittenden; and his sisters, Maggie Parrish, Lucy Kirkland and Viola Wharton. A service celebrating Duke's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009, in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church, 142 East Jackson Street, Orlando, FL 32801. The Crittenden family will receive family and friends on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m., Rio Pinar Country Club, 8600 El Prado Avenue, Orlando, FL 32825. In lieu of flowers, friends may send donations in Duke's memory to The American Heart Association, attention Luanne Lumpkins, 237 East Marks Street, Orlando, FL 32803

Dear Helen and family,
We were so sorry to hear of Mr. Crittenden's passing. I remember fondly talking with him at the Rio Pinar pool and seeing him at the kid's various birthday parties. He was first class and very friendly. Our son Preston still talks about the visits with Darren to the skybox in Gainesville! Our prayers are with you.

Dear Crittenden Family, I was so sorry to hear of Duke's passing, what a wonderful man. My father "Cooter" Clemmons worked for him at the packing house for many years when I was growing up. I have so many memories...yet not one bad one. He will truly be missed here, but what a homecoming he had when he reached Heaven.

Dear Helen
Nancy and I are very sorry to learn of Duke's passing. He was a very wonderful person and will be remembered.

I met Duke as a salesman selling orange juice concentrate to Dairy Operators in the Northeast in the 90's. Duke treated his customers as family and always made sure the customer had a friend. Our relationship grew both in Boston and on many visits to Florida. There was no one like the 'Duke"

Our thoughts are with you and your Family.

I have known Duke for fifty years from our interests in the citrus business and the various State of Florida citrus meetings in Lakeland, and also from the Ol Timers Club. Every year Duke took a picture of a group of us citrus men. The last one he took included me, Bert Roper, S. C. Battaglia, Lester Faulhaber, Tom Behr and Gerry Fletcher. He would graciously send copies to those he photographed.

The funeral service was a wonderful tribute to Duke. He obviously touched many, many lives. I, unfortunately, could not stay for the entire service for health reasons. I am in my ninetieth year.

Duke will be sorely missed.

From the first time I met Mr.Crittenden you could tell one thing about him, he was passionate, about everything! The last time I saw him 3 years ago was just like the first he was still very passionate about everything. He never changed in all the time I was around him he treated my Dad and Mom and Brother and me just like one of his family, we are very sad to hear that he is no longer with us in the physical but will forever be with us in spirit. I will never forget his smile, which he always smiled.I do know now he still has the best seats at the Swamp and always will. My family's hearts go out to Miss Helen and the boys, they truly have lost as well as the rest of us someone very special.

Dear Helen,
I grew up knowing Duke and his brother Stan. My father enjoyed their friendship through the years and shared with me many stories and memories of their experiences in the citrus industry.
Several years ago I had an auto accident. I was devastated having totaled my new car but thrilled not to have been injured. Duke happened to be driving down Conway, saw me and as you might guess said all the right things to make me realize I was just fine!
I, like so many others, will miss him.

Dear Helen, Errol & Brian,
Many years ago Duke and your family welcomed our family to "The City Beautiful". The many wonderful memories that our families shared are still vivid in my heart and I will always cherish. Duke had a great influence on me and countless other people in his life. The Lord sent us here to learn and teach others. Duke did both with southern grace and he has been rewarded for all of his great work. Our thoughts and prayers are with Duke's soul and the family he loved.

Duke was larger than life and his heart was just as big. He will be dearly missed. To his family, our heartfelt condolences, and our reassurance to them that he shall be remembered. Duke is telling stories right now around the campfire, across the river Jordan.

September 2, 2009

Duke was a southern gentleman and I will remember him for a lifetime. When my father died he was who I could turn to for advice. I knew he cared about me
about La Cantina and that feeling was pricless. He is the embodiment of "Old orlando" and he will be sorely missed.
He was so funny too, always telling me what he wanted to eat, knowing I already knew....New York strip, grilled onions, mushrooms, garlic bread, I just loved him and he is gone to soon. Karen Hart

Helen and Kids,

Duke was a "True Gentleman" who went through life living it the way you are supposed to: he took care of his family the best he could, teased his friends unmercifully and had fun. He will be sorely missed in our community and throughout the Gator Nation and please call on me at any time for anything you and your family may need which I may provide.

Good friends are never forgotten,
