George Coffey Obituary

George N. Coffey Jr., Hall of Fame Softball Coach, born February 9, 1955 in Lexington, North Carolina passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 in Sarasota, Florida at the age of 66. He was an avid sports enthusiast and loved coaching high school softball.

George will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to experience his compassion and true love for others. He was a dedicated family man who loved spending quality time with his children and grandchildren. He loved being a role model and was committed to making a positive impact on the lives of youth in his community whether it was through his early years as director of the Osceola Boys and Girls Club or as head softball coach for the Osceola High School Kowboys. His leadership will live on in the many lives he touched. George's words of wisdom, contagious smile and infectious laughter will forever live inside the heart of each person who knew him.

George was preceded in death by his wife Victoria Coffey, parents George Nelson "Nell" and Catherine E. Coffey, and brother Cecil Coffey.

George is survived by his children George N. Coffey III "Trey" (Summer Coffey), of Sarasota, FL; Trisha Coffey, of Panama City, FL; and Shannon Ericson (Curtis Ericson), of Gainesville, FL; sisters Martha Hatfield and Cheryl Christian; brother Eddy Coffey; close cousin Lisa Giles, of Morristown, TN; his grandchildren Sion Coffey, Macy Baker, Joseph Trey "JT" Coffey, Liam Coffey and Marley Coffey and several cousins, a niece and nephews.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, December 11, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. It will be held at Osceola High School Softball Complex at 420 S. Thacker Avenue, Kissimmee, Florida 34741.

People wishing to honor George's lifelong commitment to family and community can make a donation to the George Coffey Scholarship Fund through the Foundation for Education in Osceola County.

So sorry to hear that George is gone. His passion for the game was inspiring. I umpired and acted as Umpire in Chief for the Kissimmee Klassic more many, many years and it was, I believe, George's push for excellence that inspired our Umpire Association to create a scholarship fund and tie it to his tournament. He always cared most about the players.
