Leon Handley Obituary

Despite a life many would call spectacular, Leon Handley remained a humble country boy at heart. He was born in the outskirts of Lakeland Florida on September 9, 1927 and passed away in his sleep on June 9, 2021. In the ninety-three intervening years Leon was a football player, a campus politician, a medical officer, a law student, a soldier, a cowboy, a trial lawyer, a citrus grower, a big game hunter, a skier, a Sunday school teacher, a world-traveler, a biblical scholar, a chairman of the board and so much more to every life he touched.

Leon served in the United States Merchant Marines during World War II, ending his service as a Warrant Officer. He enrolled in the University of Florida for a summer, then volunteered for the Army. After a tour in Korea he left active duty as a Sergeant and resumed his schooling. He joined the Air Force ROTC and eventual was appointed Cadet Colonel, commissioned, and left military service a Captain in the United States Air Force.

Upon returning to college Leon, became a member (and eventually Worthy Master) of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, received honors including Florida Blue Key and Phi Beta Kappa, and was a member of the university's track and cross country teams. He graduated with a degree in business administration after just two academic years, and continued his education in Gainesville by enrolling in law school.

Leon settled down in Orlando upon graduation. He practiced law first with Maguire, Voorhis, and Wells, then with Tom Gurney at the firm that would eventually be known as Gurney and Handley. His career continued with Rumberger Kirk, where he delighted in mentoring younger generations of attorneys. Throughout his career he handled cases which shaped Central Florida. But he also loved the ways he could help people as a lawyer, having never taken a fee for handling many adoption cases.

Leon married the belle of Orlando, Mary Virginia Wolfe and they had four children: Hunter, who settled in Australia and raised two boys of his own; Mary Ellen who remained in Florida with her husband and two sons; Laura, the wife of an army officer who raised her daughters across continents, and Leann who lovingly cared for her mother and father in their later years. Those six grandchildren gave Leon nine greatgrandchildren, in whom he delighted. He is predeceased by his parents Driskle and Mamie, his brother Driskle, and his beloved wife Mary Virginia.

The accomplishments and awards Leon earned are vast- among them, Orange County Bar President, the American College of Trial Lawyers and the American Board of Trial Advocates. He was selected as FLABOTA Trial Lawyer of the Year. He taught the same Sunday school class for over 60 years. He was 33rd degree Mason, a Knight Templar, a past President of Rotary and a member of several charitable foundations. He was proud of his affiliations the First Presbyterian Church, the Country Club of Orlando, and the University Club. In his travels he visited over 240 countries. His friends worldwide were too many to count.

Above all, Leon enjoyed fellowship. Whether you crossed his path professionally or personally, Leon always had a story to share and enthusiastically learned about others. His prodigious memory meant he always had the perfect joke or tale and once he met you, neither of you would forget the interaction.

A celebration of life will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Orlando on Friday, June 18 at 11am. The service will be streamed online at www.fpco.org/funeral so all who wish to share in honoring Leon may do so in person or from home. In lieu of flowers, the Handley family welcomes gifts in Leon's honor to One Heart Orlando www.oneheartorlando.org.

My condolences in your loss. I had the honor of meeting Mr. Handley as a young boy in the early 60s. I was from Apopka and went with my family Christmas shopping at Colonial Plaza Mall. I had an old wallet of my dad´s with my life savings earned mowing yards (just a very few dollars). I dropped it on the sidewalk just west of Ronnie´s which was packed solid with shoppers. I was pretty upset. Sometime during the next week, my mother told me I had to go to town to see a lawyer . She didn´t tell me why, but I knew it was a big deal because we went to downtown Orlando. When we arrived, I was very nervous. We were ushered into his office and were introduced . He reached across his desk and shook my hand and said he had something I may want. Opening his desk drawer, he produced my wallet. I think I was in shock. I had written my name and address on a card and he had tracked me down . I didn´t even count it...I was pretty sure it was all there . It was by accident...well, maybe not, that I saw his notice of his passing. After probably around 60 years, I still remembered his name, and shockingly I recognized his face . He was obviously a great man, and he made a life long impression on a young boy. Go´s bless.

Leon was truly a pillar of the community and of his church. He was a friend of my late parents, and never failed to greet me warmly when our paths crossed. A gentleman in all respects, his wonderful voice and reassuring manner always left one at ease. Orlando is so much richer to have been home to Leon Handley.

To Mary Ellen and your entire family. I am sorry for the loss of your father, a man who was accomplished in so many ways. His legacy will long be remembered, especially in his work with helping families with his pro bono work on adoption. Like your brother, I too live in Australia in Canberra specifically with my wife Fiona. I have lived here since 1990 and have been back to Orlando a few times over the years. My mother and stepfather both passed away in 2016 in Orlando and I was blessed to be able to come back and look after Mum for 6 weeks before she died. I will say a prayer for your dad and for all your family. Covid likely means your brother cannot attend, we have very strict limits on leaving Australia just now. Let me know if your brother is close by (Sydney is 4 hrs by car Melbourne is about 8 hrs by car).

Warm regards to you,
Nicholas Campbell

Leon was a dear friend and companion. I will miss his wit, his prodigious memory, and his companionship, not to mention that he introduced me to hundreds of folks who never failed to stop by our table to wish him well no matter where we were. Always gracious, Leon would stand and greet, and then introduce everyone at our table to everyone who came by to greet him. What a remarkable gentleman! He'll be missed by all who knew him!

I was so lucky to have been hired to work for Leon´s law office in my early years; an opportunity to learn at the feet of a master. I valued it then and value it even more in hindsight. On top of being a master, he was larger than life as a personality. Thank you to his family for sharing him with all of us. And may God´s peace find its way into your heart at this time.

Leon was one of the greats. He was one of my dad´s friends and certainly a mentor to many young lawyers in Orlando. Skip enjoyed seeing him at the Downtown Y for daily workouts. Leon and I shared front page "news" on Orlando Lawyer with his story and my house. So happy to share that with the great Leon Handley.

In addition to being a great lawyer, Leon was one of the funniest people I have ever known. I often said that he could have been a stand up comedian. Leon was one of a kind.
