Richard Langley Obituary

Langley, Senator Richard Dickpassed from this life to the next on Wednesday, August 9, 2017, after a hard-fought battle with brain cancer. Until the end, Dick displayed the strength, courage and tenacity that defined him. It is impossible to sum up Dick's life within an obituary, but his family wanted to share just a small part of his story to help capture the essence of this passionate, loving and powerful man, who did his best to make the most of every day he was given on this earth. Dick was born in Lakeland, Florida on February 22nd 1937, but lived most of his life in the Lake and Sumter county areas he loved so dearly. Dick was an attorney for over 50 years, working in Clermont since the day after Christmas in 1964, accumulating thousands of clients over the decades. Dick was also a land developer of numerous residential and commercial properties, a Army veteran of distinguished service, and a cattle rancher who loved to work his cows. Dick was known in the community for his years of service in politics, first on the Lake County School Board, then in the Florida House from 1972 to 1978, and finally the Florida Senate from 1980-1992, where he received far too many accolades to mention. Additionally, in 1997 he served on the Constitution Revision Commission. For decades Dick was a powerhouse in Florida politics and authored many of the laws that helped shape and protect the economic security and freedoms so many of us enjoy today. He once shared how extraordinary it was to be researching one of his own cases and realize "Wow, I wrote that law." Dick received awards too numerous to list for his lifetime of charitable giving. He did even more for his community and individuals anonymously, with the recipients of his charity never knowing he was the one who had delivered groceries to their home, sent them money in the mail when they needed it, or, literally, given away the jacket from off his back to a sleeping homeless man in the cold. Dick was the rare man who lived every single day of his life to the fullest. He loved to work hard, but he loved to play hard, too. He flew airplanes, enjoyed scuba diving, spear fishing, lobstering, water skiing, golf, tennis, and every kind of competitive game imaginable, even those he made up. In all his life, though, Dick loved and was most proud of his family. He was preceded in death by his mother Meriabe and his father Hubert, and, sadly, by his dearly loved daughter Dickie Marie "Dee Dee." He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Angela, and six children: Richard "Rick" Langley Jr., Stephanie Weinard and her husband Tom, Jackie Christanson and her husband Dave, Randall Langley and his wife Charlotta, Ryan Langley and his wife Dalia, and Brock Langley. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jade, Chase, Jordan, Preston, Jesse, Blake, Jenna, Rutger, Grant, Julianna, Roman, Luke, his great grandson Carter, his brothers Jimmy and Gene, and his sister Micki Blackburn Nagel. Dick was a man of deep and abiding faith in Jesus Christ and was unafraid to share with others his lifetime of joys and struggles as he did his best to follow in Jesus' steps. Dick's family believes he would want everyone to know that to the end he "fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith." 2 Tim. 4:6-7. For his family, friends and many of his colleagues the world will be a poorer place without Dick in it, but in the words of an ancient Hebrew proverb "Say not in grief 'He is no more,' but live in thankfulness that he was." Visitation will be from 5-8 PM on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at the funeral home. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at First United Methodist Church Clermont with Reverend Bruce Stewart, Open Door Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot in Greenwood Cemetery in Groveland. Becker Funeral Home, 806 W. Minneola Ave., Clermont, Florida 34711. The world truly is less without him in it. I remember going on a plane ride with him many years ago. Don't even remember the circumstances but it was just for fun. My first time in a small plane. And I also remember his work as a senator in making the way for homeschooling. I know that his family is still missing him. Prayers for all of you.

To The family of Richard Langley. I just found out that Mr. Langley had gone to be with the Lord, i had no idea he had been sick and was very sorry to hear of this. I was deeply sadden. My family has known him for many years. I believe since the early 60's. His brother Gene as well. Who was by my father's side before he passed away. Gene help lead my daddy to the Lord. I was just a young girl when I met Dick and his brother Gene and they were some of the finest people I have ever known. Dick was a very kind man and a giving man too, I pray for peace for the family during this holiday season being without your loved one but I know that your family can rejoice knowing he is with Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. That one day you will see him again. How Blessed I as well as my family to have known him. I know that he received many crowns for all his loving kindness here on earth and that he was a servant to all. That he ran the race and fought the good fight that the Lord set before him. My thoughts and prayers are with all of his family and I pray God's peace in your hearts and that you have the wonderful memories he made with you all to cherish and will always have them embedded in your hearts.Along with the Blessed assurance that he is at peace now and with all his loved ones who have gone before him i know this must give you all comfort. May God Bless you all now and forevermore. Love to all Janie Stalnaker

Back in early 1980 Dick helped us stay in the country when my husband Pierre and I first came in Clermont to build our water ski school. We shared great moments with his family, on the snow ski slopes, on the water or on the tennis court. He was a dear friend who always take the time in his busy schedule to talk to us or help us.
Our deepest thoughts to his family.

We are saddened by the passing of Mr. Langley. He was a Friend of my family for many many years. He was a Friend to my Daddy and helped him on many business/legal issues. He and my Husband, Brian also did business together and would occasionally meet at the famous Jacks BBQ or Golfing at Palisades. Dick is one of the special people who orchestrated Brian and I meeting and eventually we were married!! I will always cherish he and Angel coming to the hospital and praying for my Father that he come to know Jesus. I know Dick is in heaven rejoicing with the angels and his family members that have passed before him. While he had a "strong presence" about him, he also had such an amazing, giving heart and truly cared about people. He will be missed in this community. May Peace be with this family ❤

Knew Dick through Micki, since the mid 80's. Watched him help shape this community and admired his pioneering spirit. Played tennis with him for years, and our standing joke was 'I'd love to play Saturday, and I'll bring the balls if you bring the court." He never let me down. He will be sorely missed.

We are saddened by Dick's passing. My wife Linda is one of his many cousins. I recall him telling us a story about when he was a teenager working at Cash Feed on Lake Mirror in Lakeland Fl. Dick would bet northern folks that he could swim across the lake and back for ten dollars. He would complete the swim and collect, which as he said was good money for a kid back then. This adventure ended when Uncle Melvin as he called him saw all this and called his Mother. Melvin was my wife's Dad and worked on Lake Mirror at the Lakeland Fire Dept. Dick enjoyed telling this and laughed as he told us of his enterprise.

My sincere sympathy to Dick's family. He will be missed sorely, but he has left a legacy that will not be forgotten. I haven't been in touch in these later years, but early on Roger and I were very close to him. We loved him dearly. Thank God, Dick is in heaven today.
Much love,

As a teenager and young adult I participated with Dick in numerous adventures. Dick was a 'Live to Live' people person who never lacked for a new adventure scheme. We roomed together off campus at the U of F for a couple of years. Harpooned a hammer head shark about as long as the boat (15 ft) off Anna Maria Beach which nearly did the boat and us in. Experienced the flooding of the Withlacoochee River after a low dumped 19 inches of rain on Green Swamp and Dicks challenge to see who could swim back to shore the closest from where we jumped into the flooded raging river. Worked as loaders for his Dad at semester Christmas break from U of F and ran 'pick and haul' operations for fruit we had purchased from small family plots. Bagged and sold as organic fertilizer chicken manure. Swam in the City of Highland NC creek mountain reservoir after hanging our cloths on the No Swimming in Reservoir sign. And, numerous other impulsive adventures that only Dick's fertile mind could imagine and talk me into executing with him.

I remember the day that Dick made my husbad and me the happiest parent alive, when the adoption of our son became final. He was a fair man and loved children so much. I will truly miss him, but rejoice in knowing that the day the Lord calls me home, I will see him again. Rest in Peace Dick. God's blessing for the Langley family as they face these diffucult days.

Dick: You will be greatly missed by family and friends.
I remember you always calling me Low-retta
You were there for Dick when he was so sick..coming to pick him up and take him places..you were there till the end for him.
You were there for me after his death, taking care of legal matters and never once charging me.
You will never be forgotten.
RIP until we meet again in heaven.

As a Senator in Appropriations, Dick arranged for Lake Sumter Community College to receive funding for a large multipurpose building to help change the nature of the small junior college.

The facility housed new computer technology and nursing programs along with modern classrooms, laboratories, and improved student facilities. As a result, this enabled the institution to evolve from a quiet junior college to a more dynamic comprehensive community college (now state college) serving more students throughout Lake and Sumter counties.

His influence and support for a growing college is often overlooked but the result of his personal effort continues to benefit all.

As a teenager, I spent the majority of my time at the tennis courts near downtown Clermont. At times I would have no one to play with but would watch others play. Often, Dick would show up with some buddies to play. Even though I was just a kid, he would invite me to play and make me feel like I belonged. Although he was competitive with his friends, and had a killer serve, he would take it easy with me and my friends and help us with techniques and give life advice. I don't know if it was because I was friends with DeeDee and Mike, or because he knew my parents, but he was just really nice to me at all times. I saw him at the courthouse twenty years later and he actually recognized me. He made a point of coming up to me to find out how I had been. I know he was a busy man, but he took the time to ask me about my life and if I still played tennis. He gave me his phone number, directions to his house, and invited me to come to his house to play tennis. I will always regret not taking him up on his offer. My sincere condolences to his family!!

I remember the first time I met Dick he was clerking for Clermont attorney Bill Lee. This was about early 1970's. He was a hard working go getter and I remember my father saying to Bill Lee that he is going places and will leave his mark. Dick was good to our family throughout the yrs. He got us a settlement that took care of our family in leaner times. I will always be grateful to him for that. My thoughts to his family.

Dick was a partner, friend and mentor to me, and I will miss him greatly. Just yesterday I had a math-type issue here in the office and thought about running to his office -- because Dick could figure it out in his head before I could with a dozen calculators.... then I realized he was gone. He is already missed!

To the family of Richard Langley. We loved him like a brother. He went several miles to help us with many problems in our lives. He was the smartest man we have ever known and if we relied on him he was always right. No one could have been a better friend. We can not say enough good things about him. If he was your friend he stayed your friend. He was a GIANT to his fellow man.
. He loved the Lord and we know we will see him again. What a good man he was , Lord take care of him.
