Walter Allan Obituary

ALLAN, WALTER E.
WALTER EVERETT ALLAN passed away on May 27, 2009. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island to Annabel and Everett W. Allan on March 14, 1919. He graduated with a B.S.C.M.E. from Tufts University in 1940 and served two years in the United States Army. He then became Manager of the Waterbury Fabricated Metals Division of the Anaconda Copper Company in Waterbury, Connecticut. In 1951, he married Daphne Pierce and moved with her to reside in Woodbury, Connecticut, where they had three daughters. While there, Walter served as Chairman of the Waterbury University Club, Chairman of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Chairman of the Waterbury Fencing Club, member of the Board of Directors of Waterbury Hospital and of the Indium Corporation, as well as teaching evening classes at the University of Connecticut. In 1966, he and his family moved to Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida. After serving in various capacities at Lake Sumter Community College in Leesburg, he became its Dean of Administration. He was a lifetime member of the Masonic order, St. John's Lodge, Providence, Rhode Island. He was President of Tavares Rotary, President of SCORE, and a member of the Board of the Lake County Educators Credit Union. He was an active member of the theatrical groups the Melon Patch Players and Hawthorne Players. Walter was a skilled fencer, sailor, and amateur radio operator. Walter Allan was a man who inspired his family and students to reach their highest potential. He, himself, earned his Doctorate from Florida State University at the age of 65. In his last years, he lived in Orlando. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Daphne; his daughters Elizabeth Allan van Caloen, Patience Allan-Glick, Piper Allan Severns; and grandchildren Leslie Kirk Houck, Jonathan Allan Kirk, Caroline Elizabeth Polachek, Jennifer Monroe Polachek, and Annabel Grace Severns. A memorial service will be held June 12, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Hawthorne, 100 Hawthorne Blvd., Leesburg, FL. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations in Walter Allan's name be made to the Alzheimer's Resource Center, 1506 Lake Highland Drive, Orlando, FL.. Walter Allan was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his family, friends and associates.

My Granfather Walter was a great man and an inspiration to me always. My only regret is that we did not have more time to share our lives. He will be missed. I love you Grandad.
