Willard was a great supporter of associations. Over the years, he probably trained hundreds of employees in the fine art of organizational management. The Florida Society of Association Executives (FSAE) has a Foundation that provides scholarships, research, and education/certification opportunities for association management professionals. A graduate of Maine Township High School West in Des Plaines, IL, Bill earned his MBA from Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, MI.
He started his career at MacCormac College in Chicago, IL, as Director of Admissions from 1968 to 1971. From 1971 to 1973, he served as Assistant Executive Director of the American Dental Association in Chicago, IL. In November 1973, the Orlando-based Florida Bankers Association (FBA) recruited Bill to serve as Vice President and Educational Director, a position he held until 1984 when he decided to abandon the safety net of employment and become a risk-taking entrepreneur. At his departure, he was awarded the coveted FBA Distinguished Service Award.
In 1984, Bill and his wife Tina incorporated Kautter Management Group, an association management company that provided administrative services to scores of state, local and national organizations for nearly three decades. Bill’s decision to take the risk of owning his own company turned out to be the right one.
Bill was a well-known face in the association management community, having received several awards and recognitions over the years for his expertise in this highly specialized field.
Bill’s favorite activities included golf, boating, fishing, and in the past five years, traveling in his RV. As Bill’s health deteriorated, the RV was the perfect travel option, so he could rest and leave the driving to someone else. Throughout the years, he and Tina were “parents” to a number of Old English Sheepdogs, the latest of which is Duffy, who was at Bill’s side until the very end.

Every one of us touches so many lives in so many ways. Our actions ripple out and affect so many others in ways that we never even know.
Bill Kautter, in his role as an executive director and business owner, was affiliated with so many associations and volunteers, employed a significant number of people, and supported the community and businesses.
He knew his decisions carried weight. There was always the recognition that people depended on him and he never took that responsibility lightly. The concern for his staff, clients, and family was always evident. That kind of care and dedication often meant some personal sacrifice, worry, and hard decisions. He made a difference in the lives of many, and he is truly missed.

Some fun pictures of Bill and family.
Melodie Womble (for Roxie Betts)
January 3, 2021
Our mom, Roxie Betts, worked for Bill for many years. It was her favorite job of all the ones she had; he was her favorite boss. She died in June, 2019, at the young age of "29 and holding," (actually 97). I'm sure they are sharing many favorite memories and laughs.
Praying for your family during this challenging time.

We are so sorry to hear of Bill's passing. He was such a wonderful person... a dedicated professional and gentleman. It was a pleasure working with him at NAPR. He was a gift to all those who knew him. Our best wishes and deepest condolences to his family and friends,
