Adele Maddox Obituary

Adele C. Maddox of Ludington died April 5, 2005 after a short illness. She was born Jan. 12, 1922 in Grand Rapids, Mich., the daughter of Claude and Frieda (Schwenter) Wadel and grew up in Ludington. She graduated from St. Simon's High School in 1939 and attended Edgecliff College in Cincinnati, Ohio, graduating in 1943 with a degree in chemistry.

After working briefly for The Dow Chemical Co. and attending graduate school at Marquette University, she married James F. Maddox Jan. 9, 1947. Together they raised seven children in Midland, moving back to Ludington after Jim's retirement from Dow in 1980.

She is survived by her husband, James; her children, William J. (Rita) Maddox, Mark R. (Sarah Sutton) Maddox, Mary Ann (Jeff) Dalton, Katherine E. Maddox (Dick Hunsche), Rebecca M. (Daniel) Baker, Jack E. (Janet Garvey) Maddox, and Jane F. Maddox (James Hopfensperger); 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and brothers Bruce Wadel and Gerald Wadel. She was preceded in death by her brother William; sisters-in-law Virginia Wadel, Mary Wadel and Rita Wadel; and grandson Mac King Maddox.

Even with a houseful to care for, Adele had time to listen to, teach and encourage the individual interests of each of her children. She always welcomed an extended family and with her warm, witty, caring personality, made everyone feel comfortable and at home in her home. Wife, mother and friend, Adele greatly enriched many lives.

A funeral Mass took place Friday, April 8, 2005 at St. Simon's Church, Ludington, Mich. Dorrell Funeral Home in Ludington, Mich. was in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ludington Area Catholic Schools or the St. Simon's Food Pantry, 702 E. Bryant Road, Ludington, Mich. 49431.
