David Kanary Obituary

David Charles Kanary, 73 of Midland, died Saturday evening, Oct. 10, 2015 at Medilodge, Midland of ALS. He was born Oct. 3, 1942 in Saginaw, son of the late Thomas and Kathryn ‘Lou' (Knowles) Kanary.

On Nov. 7, 1964 he married the former Joyce Marie Jacobs in Essexville in St. John's Catholic Parish. He served his country in the United States Army and was a Vietnam veteran. After returning from his military obligation, he sought employment with The Dow Chemical Co., where he worked until his retirement in 1996, and had been a member of the United Steelworkers #12075. He was also a member of American Legion Berryhill Post #165, where he had been past commander and up until recently had been a member of the Midland Area Veterans Funeral Honor Guards.

Dave loved his classic cars, himself showing his 1964 Chevy Impala SS at car shows around the area with the "good ole' boys." Winning many trophies along the way, he whistled while waxing and polishing his prized possession and maintained an impeccable yard. Summers found Dave following the classic car circuit or fishing up on Duck Lake, or salmon fishing on Lake Michigan.

He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Joyce Marie of Midland; daughter, Susie (Mike) Cucinella of Novi; and son, Patrick (Mary Ann) Kanary of Bloomfield Hills; grandchildren, Olivia, Emma, Jameson, Brendan, Sean; a sister, Janet (Dan) Pohto of Odessa, Fla.; and brotherâ€"in-law, Patrick (Ginny) Jacobs of Pinconning; and sister-in-law, Lorraine Kanary of Arvada, Colo. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Kevin; and a brother, Frank Kanary.

Funeral services for David will take place 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, 2015, from the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Chapel, 1200 West Wheeler Street. Mr. Jerry Beebe and Chaplain Kenneth B. Burtch will officiate, with interment to follow in Midland City Cemetery with military honors presented by the Midland Area Veterans. David's family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, and again on Thursday, from 10 a.m. until time of the service.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Midland Area Veterans Honor Guard, American Legion Post #165 or Heartland Hospice of Bay City. The family wishes to thank the staff at both Heartland Hospice and Medilodge of Midland for the care David received during his time there.

Joyce, I'm so sorry to hear about Dave's passing. I enjoyed seeing him when he drove the parts truck for us at Midland Ford. I'll miss seeing his Ford Ranger parked out back, and it always looked like it came off the showroom floor. I also had the honor to see him several times at military funerals, and he would always come over and give me a hug. He was a wonderful man, and he'll be sorely missed by everyone at Midland Ford.

Dave was always such a nice man. He would come into Dirk Waltz and we always had a nice chat, he would always bring in pictures of his car or of his family (you could tell he loved his family). He will be missed. So sorry for your families loss!!

Dave was an incredibly kind and caring man. When I deployed to Iraq he came over and handed me the Saint Christopher he wore in Vietnam. I kept that in my breast pocket throughout my entire deployment before returning home. As his neighbor for many years, Dave never failed to say hello when he saw me in the back yard. His kindness will never be forgotten.
