Donald J. "Jack" McLaughlin, of Freeland, passed away early Sunday morning, July 31, 2011, at Brittany Manor Nursing Home in Midland after a lingering illness at the age of 81 years. Jack was born June 22, 1930 to the late Roy and Mabel G. (Kennedy) McLaughlin and resided in this area all of his life. He was a member of Freeland United Methodist Church. Jack was an avid bowler, enjoyed restoring old cars and woodworking. He served on the Tittabawassee Township Fire Department for 27 years. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Jack started at the Freeland State Bank in 1955 as a teller, working there until he became bank president in January 1984, which he served in that position until July 2011. Jack also enjoyed spending time with his family and working in his yard.
On Feb. 9, 1952, Jack married Sue O. Reavey, she survives him. Also surviving are two sons, Gary (Ann) McLaughlin, and Michael (Cynthia) McLaughlin, both of Freeland. Five grandchildren, Jennifer (Steve) Hoyer, Anthony (Mary) McLaughlin, Heather (Trent) Warzecha, Stephanie (Steve) Eyster, and Lindsay McLaughlin; and nine great-grandchildren also survive Jack. A brother and sister-in-law, Robert (Betty) McLaughlin preceded Jack in death.
Funeral and committal services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011, at the Freeland United Methodist Church in Freeland. The Rev. James Rule will officiate, with burial to follow in LaPorte Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cunningham/Taylor Funeral Home, 310 E. Washington St., Freeland, on Thursday from 6-8 p.m., Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., and then at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Alzheimer's Association, Heartland Hospice of Bay City, Freeland United Methodist Church, or the donor's favorite charity.
