Elwyn E. "Mike" Merrill

Elwyn "Mike" E. Merrill, 90, of Midland, died Friday, March 28, 2013, at his home. The son of the late Ernest and Pearl (Smith) Merrill was born Jan. 14, 1923, in Mount Pleasant. He attended Central Michigan University and graduated from University of Michigan with his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. On Nov. 25, 1943, he married the former Grace Bonnell in Mt. Pleasant.

Mr. Merrill served with the U.S. Navy during World War II as a PT boat captain. Mike worked for the Dow Corning Corp. and later worked for the Dow Chemical Co., retiring after 32 years of service. He was a long time member of the Midland First United Methodist Church and the Midland Kiwanis Club. He was an avid boater, a past commander of the Saginaw Yacht Club and was passionate about his cars and golf. Mike enjoyed music and was an accomplished pianist and organist.

Mr. Merrill is survived by his wife of 70 years, Grace Merrill; son, William (Pamela) Merrill of League, Texas; daughter, Patty (Robert) Wallace of Kingwood, Texas; grandchildren, Robert Merrill, Cameron Wallace and Sara Wallace; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 4, 2013, from the First United Methodist Church with The Rev. Dr. Charles Keyworth officiating. Interment will be in Midland City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered to the Midland First United Methodist Church.
