Matthew Gay Obituary

Matthew Tyler Gay
Matthew Tyler Gay—affectionally known as "Matt Gay", 39, of Sanford, was called home to heaven by our merciful, heavenly Father on January 6th, 2022 due to complications after a brief illness. Upon arrival, Matt was lovingly greeted and embraced with a long hug by his earthly father and best friend, Kyle, who went to be with Jesus in April of 2020.
Matt was born to Kyle and Betty (Crower) Gay in Midland, Michigan on February 8th, 1982. He is survived by his devoted and beloved mother, Betty; sister and brother-in-love, Jessica (Gay) and David Lyon (of Colorado) and their three children Blaine, Hannah, and Severan. Matt leaves behind a large family—aunts, uncles, and cousins—and an even larger group of friends who became family and are too numerous to name, though Matt would have liked to have each of you recognized because of how much you meant to him. Matt worked at Meijer for over 20 years, serving and connecting with the community. In his spare time, his second home—Lost Lake Woods Club—served as a place of respite for him where he drove his latest (and greatest) UTV and made the rounds, connecting with anyone who wanted to talk.
Matt was differently abled from birth and became accustomed to doctors, therapists, and special school experiences. Some doctors suggested that Matt would not be very successful in life, but our mighty God and his loving family and friends believed differently and Matt became a thoughtful, contributing member of society who excelled in human-kindness! He was a loving, generous neighbor to all and despite the challenges he faced, his greatest asset was being child-like. Jesus said, "So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven." (Mt. 18:4) Matt was naturally inquisitive and deeply curious about life, other people's lives, and faith in Christ. He asked a lot of questions, listened intently, and humbly admitted when he didn't understand something. He was imperfect, like the rest of us, but he approached life with wide, wondering eyes and with an open heart that was admirable to all. Matt's questions have now been answered in perfection.
While Matt had many gifts most will remember him as a talented artist. He painted, crafted, sketched and built the most unique and beautiful masterpieces. His art was shocking, and humorous at times, but always incredible and evoked emotion in the people whom he gifted it to. He would spend hours and hours and hours drawing, coloring, painting, and making pottery. Matt's creative capacity defied description and he seemed most free when he was using his hands and his heart to create something beautiful. He is now in a place filled with magnificent color and boundless beauty. We could hear him say, "NO WAY!" as he sauntered into heaven handing out high-fives and Matt Gay hugs.
Matt noticed people in a way that most don't —regardless of their appearance, age, race, position, or status. He was honest and direct in his communication, and he cared deeply—especially for those in need. A compassionate and committed friend, Matt remembered details about people's lives, and he knew their stories. Matt appreciated a good story more than anyone. He would retell the stories that impressed him most and he especially valued those that included humor, adventure, or fast and expensive cars! Matt is now surrounded by saints—new friends—whom he will undoubtedly laugh and converse with for eternity.
Finally, Matt loved life and he lived it BIG. Oftentimes, the world could not see or experience life in the same way Matt did. He was unapologetically different while at the same time he wanted, more than anything, what we all want—to be deeply known and loved unconditionally. Matt had the gift of gab and he loved to laugh! And what a laugh he had! It was huge and loud and fun and we will miss his larger-than-life personality. Matt now knows a love that exceeds all expectations. His desire to be seen, heard, and deeply loved is fulfilled in Christ and for that we give thanks to God.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Matt at Midland Evangelical Free Church on Saturday, February 12th at 12:00 noon. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Creative 360 or Midland's Open Door.

My thoughts and prayer are with the family. Matty was someone I loved to see when we were in school and always made my day bright when I would see him while he was working over the years. He never failed to say hello, offer a compliment and share a smile. Seeing him always brought a smile to my face. Heaven is a brighter place with him there. He blessed this earth in the time he was here.

Matt, you were one of our favorites here at Bay Cycle. Your love for life, laugh, and of course your Side by Side was so appreciated whenever you were in the store or on the phone with one of us. Keep the trails in good shape for us up in Heaven buddy!

My deepest sympathy to Matt's family, his mother Betty, his sister Jessica and all who loved this special young man. Every time I go to Meijer where he worked for some time I miss his friendly greeting and eagerness to help. He always asked about my husband who he called Uncle Wilson and told me about his fishing, hunting and artistic efforts that he knew we would find interesting. His beautifully written obituary captured his sweet personality and said so much about how much he will be missed and always remembered with love.

I had the privilege to make Matt's acquaintance and I always looked forward to his smiling face and humorous stories. The "No way!" portion of the obituary caused me to chuckle and get teary eyed, as I have heard that comment from him, on a few occasions, and I can see his face as he said it.
Blessings upon all of you as you gather in his memory and share in the many ways this unique man touched our lives. God bless and keep you always.

I have just heard the sad news and I still cannot believe that Matt has moved on to a better place so soon. I shall miss him terribly and I am so sorry I did not have a chance to say goodbye. I have known Matt for years, since he was a young child. I have watched him grow into a wonderful, loving and competent, and confident young man blessed with so many talents. Although we met only sporadically, more as casual acquaintances than anything else, I have always felt a deep and meaningful bond with him. It was always a holiday when I saw him and each encounter made my day better than it was "before Matt". His openness, unconditional trust and goodness to the core were unique. I have seen him interact with his parents for many years and I knew that he has reached his maximum potential thanks to them. Matt has made a multi-media card for me once. I treasured it and studied it often. Each time I discovered something yet unseen in it. Unfortunately, it became one of the victims of the 2020 flood. But I remember every detail, I can see it in my mind. Matt, may you always have peace knowing that we all love you and admire you. You have filled our hearts forever. RIP

Loved that boy! I can hear him saying "No Way" and then his little giggle! He would get so excited telling you about something and if he was telling you something funny, he couldn't control his giggling. He was a great worker at Meijer

Matty was one of my favorite things about playing football at Dow High. He had so much energy, enthusiasm and was just a fun person to be around. He was one of the guys when he was around and everyone loved him. Nobody treated him any differently, which is why I think he enjoyed being around us. Condolences on the loss of Matt, he will be missed

Matt, camping at LLWC will not be the same. We are going to miss your many stories of hunting, fishing, and quad riding. I will miss your phone calls telling me about your latest works of art. You had so much talent to share but your greatest was being a friend to all of us my family and I will always hold onto all the happy memories that we have of you! Rest well Matt

Oh my sweet Mattie! At our family gatherings you were always "the man of the hour" (as your Gramma Millie says ...and I agree). That big Ole smile and excitement for your favorite foods. You would make sure to list from your memory, some of your past favorites...like Aunt Diane pies: "the best"! I loved your "guess what..." never ever knowing what was coming next fro that Mattie Gay, but you surely didn't want to miss the big story you were about to hear! Gonna miss you bud.

I remember Matty from high school. I'm 41 years old now and I still remember his smile and how friendly he was. It's so good to know that didn't change beyond high school. Rest in peace, Matty. You'll never know the impact you made in this world. Thank you for being a shining light. My prayers and condolences to his entire family.
